Folk Arts of Ilocos Region and


Cordillera Autonomous Region ( CAR )

Cordillera Administrative Region
The Ilocanos are among the largest ethno-
linguistic group in the country.
Majority of them are living in La Union, Abra,
Isabela.
The Ilocanos are highly influenced by
Christianity.
The Paoay Church and the old houses of
Vigan are reminders of the distant past that
continue to lure visitors from local and
foreign tourist.

Is known as the salt capital of the region.
Popular stories say it is a Muslim Kingdom
ruled by Urduja.
Second province for our National Hero Dr.
Jose P. Rizal where his childhood love
blossomed when he fell in love with his
cousin, Leonor Rivera from Pangasinan.
It is also known as the Bangus Capital of the
Philippines.

BENGUET:
It is the home for the Cordilleran ( the
politically correct term for IGOROTS.
Aside from them, there were Tagalog, Ibalois,
Ilocanos, Kankaney and Ikalahan living in
Benguet.
Igorot are hillside dwellers this explain why
most of them are farmers.
KALINGA:
People of Kalinga are great weavers.
Their cloth weaving and basketry are among
the finest product in the region.
Kalinga textile are characterized by the
dominant red stripe and geometrical motifs.

IFUGAO:
The term Ifugao means people from the hill
that is why Non- Cordilleran called them as
Igorots, but they prefer the first name which
is Ifugao.
Their legend tell that the first grains of rice are
given to men by god.

ILOCOS REGION:
They are known for their iloco or inabel fabrics.
It is made from cotton which undergo the
painstaking binatbatan or beating of the
cotton balls using bamboo stick.
Threads are dyed from the sap of black plum
called sagut.
This weaving tradition is called panagabel, the
oldest ilocano tradition that they have
inheritted from their ancestors.

PANGASINAN:
Arts and crafts includes the smoothly-weaved
Bolinao mats made from buri or raffia leaves,
and the bamboo crafts of San Carlos.
BENGUET:
Artistic expression are related to farming such
as tinalik basket made from rattan. They are
also famous because of their farming on
terraces carved out of the mountain.

KALINGA:
People of Kalinga are great weavers.

IFUGAO:
The Ifugao weave a loincloth called ikat which
is actually an Indonesian term, meaning to
bind together.

Known for it hanging coffins.
Also known for Kadangyan burial cloth.
Tattoo Art is another form of folk arts in
Mountain Province.
Bontoc are known for their different type of
basket such as bobo and suklang. Bobo is
used to catch fish from the river. Suklang is
an everyday hat used by men.

tattooed Visayas tribe
and they called the
islands "La Isla De Los
Pintados" which meant
the "Islands of the
Painted Ones."
