Welcome
On behalf of the Old Home Day Committee and the Old
Homestead Association we invite you to browse this booklet
appreciating the efforts made by a small group of volunteers
working on your and our behalf to enhance community life
in our Town. Included are several activities taking place over
the course of the summer that we truly hope that you will
avail yourselves of. Most are free or a very minimal cost.
We were greatly encouraged that the businesses and
Community Supporters you see listed in this booklet saw our
vision and supported it. Without the support of these folks,
none of this would be possible.
We are pleased to live in a Town that cares about the
quality of life for its inhabitants. These activities give us an
opportunity to catch up with friends, make new friends, or
just sit back and enjoy. Whatever your inclination, we think
we are offering something for everyone.
We welcome your involvement, your comments (good or bad)
and look forward to welcoming you. When you see any of
us, or patronize any of the businesses, please let us know
what you think about how we are doing. Together, we will
continue to make Swanzey the best place ever to live in!

We ask questions that were unanswered in ofcial reports, about the complete destruction
of the three World Trade Center Towers 1, 2 and 7 on Sept. 11, 2001.
The events of that tragic day led to unprecedented losses of civil liberties,
and two bitter wars that have cost thousands of lives and still strain our economy today.
In the 10th anniversary year, it is past time for the truth to emerge. We seek a new investigation, because 9/11 still matters.

Please inform yourself...

The Poet, Eugene Field, wrote:

To Denman Thompson
Theres somethin in your homely ways,
Your simple speech, and honest face
That takes us back to other days
And to a distant, cherished place.
We seem to see the dear old hills,
The clover-patch, the pickerel pond,
And we can hear the mountain rills
A-singin in the haze beyond.
There is the lane wherein we played,
An there the hillside, rough an gray,
Oer which we little Yankees strayed
A-checkerberryin evry day;
The big red barn, the old stone wall,
The pippin-tree, the favrite beach
We seem to recognize em all
In thy quaint face an honest speech!
An somehow when we see em rise
Like spectres of those distant years,
We kinder weaken, and our eyes
See dimly through a mist o tears;
For there s no thing will touch the heart
Like memrys subtle wand, I trow,
An there s no tear that will not start
At thought of home an long ago.
You make us boys an girls again,
An like a tender, sweet surprise,
Come thoughts of those dear moments when
Our greatest joy was mothers pies!
I d ruther have your happy knack
Than all the arts which critics praise
The knack o takin old folks back
To childhood homes and childhood days.

THE OLD HOMESTEAD STORY

As the play opens, we learn that Joshs son, Reuben, has left town with a clouded
reputation and gone to New York City.
Josh, a true old-style rube sets out to nd the boy and becomes totally confused
as he tries to take the measure of the City by what he knows of the world from his
life in Swanzey.
The mix of pathos and wit give the play its unique character as a comedy melodrama in the tradition of theater as it was over a century ago. Predictably, the play
has a happy ending.

THE HISTORY OF DENMAN THOMPSON

As an aging song-and-dance man in the mid 1870s who has never earned more
than $25.00 a week Denman is struck with arthritis that threatens his career, such
as it is. He has a wife and three children to support.
Denman recalls the years of his adolescence, when he lived in the small New
Hampshire town of Swanzey, and writes a short sketch entitled Joshua Whitcomb. At rst this sketch is barely 25 minutes long, but Denman would eventually expand it to three acts. This is what brought Denman his rst wealth and
allowed him to build an ornate home here in West Swanzey.
Denman collaborated with George Ryer to write The Old Homestead a four act
play which Denman would produce and act in for the rest of his life. It was rst
performed at the Boston Theater in 1886. Denman said that in the 35 years that he
produced The Old Homestead he had played Uncle Josh over 15,000 times.

Yellow Box
The play falls into obscurity until 1939 when a community association, along with

Folioa local church, decides to perform the play as a fundraising idea. This year is the
70th revival of the play!

LIVE OXEN IN REVIVAL

Oxen were the dominant draft
animals on the 19th century New
England farm. A typical New England
town might have between 100 and
200 teams. They pulled plows, dung
carts, hay wagons, harrows and log
sleds. Although slower than horses,
they were heartier: calmer; cheaper,
as offspring of dairy cattle; required
only grass and no special feed; used
a simple wooden yoke instead of a
costly harness and tack; and when
their working life was over at eight to
ten years could still be butchered as
beef.

About Captain Otis Whitcomb

Swanzeys Biggest Rural Characters Pull For Their Town

The original Old Homestead, which Denman Thompson made famous, stands only a short distance from the Potash Bowl. For many years it
was the home of Captain Otis Whitcomb, from whom Denman Thompson
drew the principal character of The Old Homestead play. Here and there
he worked in a few characteristics of another Swanzey man, Josh Holbrook.
The last name of Captain Otis and the rst name of Joshua Holbrook were
combined by Mr. Thompson to form his principal character Joshua Whitcomb.

Star & Bright are honored to be the biggest stars in The Old Homestead. Watch for them
in the first act! With Ike, their best friend and mentor, the personable cattle will be in
residence at the Potash Bowl for rehearsals during the entire week leading up to Old
Home Day. They hope for lots of visitors.
Along with hauling firewood,
Star & Bright are responsible
for picking up after themselves.
Here they pull the manure sled
up the hill to the vegetable garden. Homegrown pumpkins
and cabbage are favorite treats
for the cattle.

The following are excerpts from the family history and diary of Captain
Otis Whitcomb, compiled by his great granddaughter, Myrtle Whitcomb
Dunham.

Captain Otis raised eighteen children and hed promised his wife a silk
dress if it had reached twenty.

Other places to find Swanzeys ambassadors of open space protection

Celebrating Old Home Day in the parade and at the Potash Bowl
on Saturday, July 16. Leading the Monadnock Humane Societys
Walk for Animals on Sunday, September 11. Marching in the MRHS
Homecoming Parade, and in a diploma ceremony: As educated 4-yearolds, Star & Bright officially become oxen. Date TBA.

When Captain Otis was invited to be Denmans guest at the Boston Opera House, he was presented with a gold-headed cane inscribed, To Capt.
Otis Whitcomb, the original Uncle Josh signed by Denman Thompson.
The numerals of the year it was presented, are loose in the head of the cane.
This cane is now on display at the Swanzey Historical Museum.
He was a great wrestler, taught almost every man around Swanzey, old
and young, how to wrestle. Denman was one of his pupils.
Hed pull off his boots, get into an old pair of slippers, and dance a
breakdown none of the youngsters could keep up with.
Father was the last to go to bed. Every night hed see we were all asleep
rst. Hed wander around the house gathering up the shoes we thrown off.
He used to say he couldnt count us in bed, but he knew when the old bushel
basket was full of shoes we were all safe under the roof.
Den took Captain Otis to New York on a visit. There is considerable in
The Old Homestead of his doings in the big city. He got lost and along
towards midnight turned up under a policemans care. His love for music
was great, and it was such hard work on Sunday night to get him past the
Grace Church, that Den put that scene into the play.

This past winter, Ike has

been instructing Star &
Bright in the ways of the
forest products industry:
The three cattle have been
clearing a 7-acre timber
pasture on Honey Hill.
Thanks to Rick Lewis, Ikes
new teamster, Ike adapted
quickly to working in a
single yoke. His gentlemanly attitude persists in
the woods, where he waits

patiently
and limb the trees. Once

hitched, he moves his log

Ike and Rick Lewis hauling out firewood, April 2011. Rick carved Ikes
yoke and crafted his harness, along with the decorative headpad and collar.
(Rick dicovered that Ike likes to wear bling to work.) It may look as if Ike is
standing still, but Rick is running to keep up with him!
