At Kailua Intermediate all students are required to do a mandatory independent science or engineering project.

Due dates for the project are listed below. We will be working a little in class to understand skills and practices
of science and engineering disciplines; however, this is largely an independent project.

List of Due Dates for Mandatory Independent Science Project
Assignment Assignment Description Due Date
Paragraphs of Interest
(All Students)
Write about three different topics that interest you. Two paragraphs
about each topic: what do I know, what would I like to know.
No later than
August 8
Question The specific question the student will be investigating in the controlled
science project..
August 20
Research Paper

The purpose of the Research Paper is to provide information to help
understand why the experiment or design turns out the way it does. It
should include:
Clear description of the question the researcher intends to
answer.
The history of similar experiments or inventions.
Definitions of all important words and concepts that describe
the experiment.
Answers to all the background research plan questions.
Mathematical formulas, if any, that are needed to describe
the results of the experiment.
This will be scaffolded - meaning there will be separate due dates
leading up to the final due date for the paper.
September 12
Variables and
Hypothesis
An explanation of which factors will be changed while conducting the
experiment and a hypothesis on the resulting impact of the change.
September 19
Materials and
Procedures
A detailed list of the materials that will be used to conduct the
experiment and the detailed steps that will be followed while conduct
the experiment
September 26
Conducting the
Experiment
This is the date that the controlled experiment should be completed.
This is just the raw data, I will be expecting to see the written and
numerical data - not analysis or graphs (at this point).
October 17
Data Analysis and
Graphs
The analysis of the experimental data. A summary of the findings of
the experiment.
October 24
Conclusions and Final
Discussion
Summary of Project: An explanation of the results of the experiment.
Explanation of how the project connects to everyday life. Discuss
failures or errors in the experimentation as well as the successes.
October 31
Display Board The final project board that will be display the science project. November 14
School Science &
Engineering Fair
Science and engineering projects that will be judged by the schools
science department and community scientists. Top ten will advance
to the Windward District Science and Engineering Fair.
December 3
Kailua Intermediate
Showcase Night
All projects will be displayed for families to view at the schools
showcase night in January.
January
City/County Science &
Engineering Fair
Located at the Windward Community College in Kaneohe. Ten
student projects will be selected. These projects will be the top 10
projects from the school science fair.

Defining the Problem Students should state the challenge problem in their own words.
Example: How can I design a __________ that will __________?

Research Paper

The purpose of the Research Paper is to provide information to help
understand why the experiment or design turns out the way it does. It
should include:
Clear description of problem to be solved.
The history of similar solution to this problem.
Definitions of all important words and concepts that describe
the experiment.
Answers to all the background research plan questions.
Mathematical formulas, if any, that are needed to describe
the results of the experiment.
Brainstorming of possible solutions. This can be in list
format or illustrations with labels.
This will be scaffolded - meaning there will be separate due dates
leading up to the final due date for the paper (9/12/14).
September 12
Idea explanation and list
of variables
An explanation what will be built and how this particular design will
solve the problem addressed. List out what items may affect the
product
September 19
Identify Criteria and
Constraints
Students should specify the design requirements (criteria).
Remember: Criteria are specific outcomes for a project. What do you
want it to do? and How well do you want it to be done?

My project must
September 19
Brainstorm Possible
Solutions
Student should jot down and draw ideas as you think about ways to
solve the problem. Labels and arrows should be included to identify
parts and how they might move. These drawings should be quick and
brief.
September 26
Generate Ideas In this step, The student should develop two or three ideas more
thoroughly. Students should create new drawings that are
orthographic projections (multiple views showing the top, front and
one side) and isometric drawings (three-dimensional depiction).
These are to be drawn neatly, using rulers to draw straight lines and
to make parts proportional. Parts and measurements should be
labeled clearly.
September 26
Select an Approach Student should identify the design that appears to solve the problem
the best. Students should write a statement that describes why they
chose the solution. This should include some reference to the criteria
and constraints identified above.
October 3
Build and Test a Model
or Prototype
Students should construct a full-size or scale model based on their
drawings. Prototypes should be tested and notes should be made
about how the prototypes worked. If the prototype or model didnt
work, changes should be made to fix problems. Charts should be
made to collect data about each of the trials.. At least three trial
runs should be completed.
October 17
Data Analysis and
Graphs
Any graphs that can be made to show the data. A paragraph should
be written to explain the graph.
October 24
Conclusion and Final
Discussion
Summary of Project: An explanation of the results of the model or
prototype. Students should write how this connects to real life and
how the model or prototype can solve the original problem. Write
about failures as well as successes.
