This October marks the beginning of the annual Friends of the Senior Center fundraising
drive. Donations provide funds to support ongoing and needed services for the Longmont
Senior Center. These may include facility and program enhancements, support services,
unfunded requests and numerous other programs. In 2014 the Friends have budgeted
$15,000 of accrued donated funds to provide physical improvements to the Senior Center.
Your donations make a difference in services and improvements to the Senior Center.
The Friends consists of a group of 12 diverse volunteers who promote the annual
fundraising campaign and manage donated funds. The Friends receive support and advice
from the Longmont Senior Center's excellent staff and the City Council-appointed Senior
Citizens Advisory Board (senior volunteers). The Friends meet on a monthly basis to
review the current financial status, budget and any unfunded requests.
Donations can come from individuals, estates, trusts, businesses, or grants. All donations
are welcome whether they are large or small. There are many ways by which donations
can be made, including cash, stocks, bonds, bequests, gift annuities, and many others.
Donations may also be made in memory of or in honor of a friend or loved one. Donors are
recognized in the GO catalog and the Donor Book which is located in the lobby. The Friends
have recently upgraded the donation recognition giving tree. This is now on the east wall of
the lobby.
Donations may be mailed to the Friends of the Longmont Senior Center, Inc., P.O. Box 313,
Longmont, CO 80502-0313, they may be left at the LSC front desk, or made via PayPal at
the Friends website, www.friendslongmont.org.
The Friends board thanks all donors for their continued, generous support. We have a
wonderful Senior Center. Each of us has an opportunity to support it through donations
and/or volunteer work. Today we have a great facility and with your support we can make
it even better as it serves the growing senior population.

Penny & Red:
The Life of Secretariats Owner
Activity #483000.02
Date: Tuesday, October 14
Time: 5:30 p.m.
As part of the Boulder
International Film Festivals
(BIFF) outreach program,
we are fortunate to have the
director of the movie "Penny and Red" to introduce
the flm and answer questions following the flm. The
flm goes from her parents climb out of poverty to her
own emergence as the "First Lady of Racing." Penny
Chenerys life has always been fueled by the love
of horses. Forever paired with the great Secretariat.
Penny's personal story also exemplifes the rise of
women in her generation. The woman who emerges
from this surprisingly candid documentary is no
Disney princess. Yet Pennys unstinting refection of
her life of caged ambition, suddenly liberated by a
horse of transcendent power, still gives of a shimmer
of grace. Weaving together previously-unreleased
photos and flms from family archives and intimate
conversations with award-winning flmmaker John
Tweedy, Penny & Red reveals her story as never
before. Depending on circumstances, Penny is also
hoping to join us! (2013, 60 min.)

National Wilderness Preservation system for the use
and beneft of the American people. In Colorado,
3.6 million acres have been protected, including
such diverse lands as the Maroon Bells, Gunnison
Gorge, and Great Sand Dunes, and much of Rocky
Mountain National Park. John Fielder, Colorados
best-known photographer, has worked tirelessly
to promote the protection of Colorados ranches,
open space, and wildlands during his 33-year career
as a nature photographer and publisher. Tonight
he presents "A Celebration of 50 Years of Colorado
Wilderness," a 75-minute visual journey with over 200
images of Colorado and other American wilderness
accompanied by beautiful music, and Johns stories of
life on the trail during 40 years exploring wilderness.
The event includes a book sale and signing.

Sandra Wong Trio, with the
Nykelharpa and Fiddle!
Born in Ithaca, New
York, Sandra Wong
began studying the
violin at age seven
with the intention of
becoming a concert
violinist. This was
her sole focus for the
next 15 years until she discovered fddling, and her
entire musical world turned upside down! It began
with Irish, Oldtime and Bluegrass jams and festivals,
and has grown into teaching, performing, recording
and collaborating with other musicians from a
diverse range of world music genres. In 1999, she
was introduced to (and fell in love with!) a wonderful
Swedish folk instrument, the nyckelharpa (a 16
stringed, keyed bowed instrument). It has become
an integral part of her work and musical expression.
To date, Sandra has released two solo albums, "It's
About Time" (on fddle) and "Joy" (on nyckelharpa). A
new album is scheduled to be released this year.

The Boulder
Bassoon Quartet
The Boulder
Bassoon Quartet
consists of four
professional
musicians with
many years
of experience
playing classical,
pop, jazz, and
original works. They have been performing together
since 2006 and enjoy engaging with the audience,
appealing to them not only with the very nature
of the bassoon and its enormous capabilities, but
also through an illuminating look at how musicians
approach music, both familiar and unfamiliar.
They showcase well-known tunes including music by
the Beatles and flm scores like Star Wars, in addition
to original works by local composers such as Bill
Douglas and quartet member Kent Hurd. Performing
throughout Colorado and beyond, they premiered
So Cliche, a piece written specially for them at the
2011 International Double Reed Society Conference.

As the heirs to a Western contemplative tradition that
can be traced back at least as far as Pythagoras, C.S.
Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and their friends (collectively
known as the Oxford Inklings) were able to develop
a view of time and eternity that enabled the wise to
live according to reason, in peace with nature, and
without fear of death. This class examines that view as
it appears in the literary and philosophical writings of
the Inklings and as it can be applied to everyday life.
Romanticism Come of Age:

Date: Mondays, October 6, 13, 20, 27

Generations have enjoyed the imaginative fction
of C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and their friends among
the literary circle that called itself the Inklings, but
few realize that behind Narnia and Middle-earth
lies a complex and unorthodox view of God, nature,
and human consciousness. Join us as we explore
a worldview that both looks back to the works of
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, William Wordsworth,
and Samuel Taylor Coleridge and looks forward
to a solution to the existential crisis facing us in an
increasingly material age.

Activity #483000.02
Date: Tuesday, October 14
Time: 5:30 p.m
This showing is unique in that we are fortunate to
have the director of the movie "Penny and Red"
introduce the film and answer questions following
the film. The film goes from her parents climb out
of poverty to her own emergence as the "First Lady
of Racing." Penny Chenerys life has always been
fueled by the love of horses, forever paired with
the great Secretariat. Penny's personal story also
exemplifies the rise of women in her generation. The
woman who emerges from this surprisingly candid
documentary is no Disney princess. Yet Pennys
unstinting reflection of her life of caged ambition,
suddenly liberated by a horse of transcendent
power, still gives off a shimmer of grace. Weaving
together previously-unreleased photos and films
from family archives, and intimate conversations
with award-winning filmmaker John Tweedy, Penny
& Red reveals her story as never before. Depending
on circumstances, Penny is also hoping to join us!

Core Strengthening
Using a variety of equipment such as balls, bands,
steps, mats on the floor and standing, youll learn
ways to strengthen and stretch your core muscles

improved balance, and better outlook on life.

Nordic Walking
Nordic walking is defined as fitness walking with
specially designed light-weight poles. Two of the
best things about it is that it can be done anywhere;
sidewalks, trails, parks, and in any kind of weather.
Learning the correct technique allows you to "open
up" the short and tight muscles in front of the
body (hip flexors, pectorals and shoulder muscles),
and strengthen weak muscles in the back of the
body (calves, hamstrings, glutes, back and triceps).
By sitting too much, we create this front/back
imbalance. Taught by Hope Engel PT, DPT, GCS,
Outpatient Rehab Manager, Summit Rehab.

Aging in Place Safely: By Sheena Jaffer
Simple and practical tips to keep elders who are aging in place safe and contribute to their well-being.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than a third of adults ages 65 and
older fall each year. Statistics show that every 18 to 20 seconds an older adult ends up in the emergency
room because of a fall, many of which happen in their own homes. Data suggests that only about
15 percent of those aging in place take proactive steps to safeguard their homes. As caregivers and
professionals, it is a good practice to regularly assess a homes safety. Here are 12 useful tips. While this
list may not encompass every potential hazard, it will serve as a good, practical start.

1. Keep a printed list of emergency and family phone numbers in large font, inserted in a clear
plastic sleeve close to the telephone, in the bedroom and-or kitchen.
2. Place lamps and a cordless phone within easy reach of the bed or often-used chair.
3. Ensure there is a clear pathway between the bedroom and bathroom.
4. Set up nightlights in the bedroom and bathroom.
5. Keep a flashlight close to the bedside and another in the kitchen in case of emergencies.
6. Discard all throw rugs.
7. Ensure suitable chair heights, including tub and toilet seats.
8. Double check shoes for proper fit, preferably they are low heels and slippers with non-skid soles.
9. Ensure there is a long-handled shoehorn to assist putting on footwear.
10. Organize clothes and necessities so they are within easy reach.
11. Maintain assistive devices, such as walkers, canes, wheelchairs and others in good working order
12. Explore the latest safety and security assistive technologies that might facilitate an optimal
quality of life.

Hikes
A variety of hiking destinations
with different skill levels have been
planned. All hikers are responsible
for bringing and carrying their
own gear: water/drink, food,
clothing, and equipment. Hikers
are also responsible for staying
with the group and being able to
maintain a pace appropriate to
the rating. Please see our Hiking
Newsletter for our rating system,
equipment suggestions, and
other program tidbits. Mileage is
approximate and represents the
entire distance. The hike locations may be changed
based on unforeseen conditions (e.g., weather,
construction). Return time may vary according to
location, weather, pace, and trail conditions. Prior
to hiking, be sure to check with your physician
regarding starting this program to make sure you
are in good health. Hiking, especially at higher
elevations, can be strenuous. If you have questions
about your conditioning or endurance level, we
encourage you to begin with a hike rated "easy."

Trips are scheduled on various modes of transit:
minibuses, school buses, and coach buses. The style
of bus is dependent upon cost, size of group, and

of buses. We always try to be cost efcient and
comfort oriented.
Departure times are defnite. We do not wait for
participants past the designated departure time
either from the Senior Center or returning to the
Senior Center.
Return times are approximate. Please do not
schedule appointments close to the return times;
we never know when delays may occur.
Bus seat assignments are made at the time of

themselves and one other person (shared seating).
These assigned seats are used both going to and
from the trip destination. For extended trips, you will
draw new seats each day.
Cancellations must be received by the dates
printed in The GO if a full credit or refund is to be
given. After that date, a partial credit or refund may
be issued only if the spot is resold. Cancellations

When possible, the staff will attempt to resell your
spot to the first person on the waiting list, or if it
is last minute and the Senior Center is closed, you
may give your ticket to a person of your choice.

Mummenschanz

Mummenschanz has pioneered a new form of
visual theater that has since spawned multiple new

Bernie Schrch, MUMMENSCHANZ has since inspired
generations of show-goers across fve continents

that they have no sound or music; the language
of Mummenschanz is universal. In the wordless
universe of MUMMENSCHANZ, the ordinary becomes
extraordinary when common materials, everyday
objects (like toilet paper) and colorful abstract shapes
and forms like the famous "Clay Masks," "Slinky Man"
and "Giant Hands" spring to life.By creating a playful

Sheena Jaffer, CASP, CAPS, ASA Member and graduate of ASA's 2012 Leadership Academy, is pursuing
her lifelong calling to be an advocate for elders.
City of Longmont
Emergency ALERT -
If police & fire had to reach you in an
emergency, could they?
Anyone living within Longmont city limits that no
longer has a landline in their home and wants to
receive police and fire emergency notifications
(known as reverse 9-1-1) must register. If you
own additional communication devices, i.e.,
cell phones, VoIP (voice over Internet protocol),
email, etc., you will also want to sign up for this
service as it provides a number of additional
ways in which emergency information can be
disseminated quickly. You can sign up yourself at
www.ci.longmont.co.us/police. If we cant reach
you, we cant alert you.
File of Life
If you are home alone and suddenly become ill,
how would the paramedics know your specific
medical needs and who to call for you? If you are
in a car accident and unconscious, how would the
emergency responders know about your allergies
and medical status? You can prepare yourself
for these medical emergencies by posting the
File of Life prominently on your refrigerator. First
responders are trained to look for this information on
refrigerators. Also, consider carrying the File of Life
in your car and in your wallet or purse. This handy,
concise card contains information that details your
medical conditions, allergies, and medications. It
also lists your emergency contacts and insurance
information. You can get your free cards from
Boulder County CareConnect, 303-443-1933. www.
careconnectbc.org, or at the Senior Center.
