Professional Objectives
1. Objective: To learn the logistics behind the University of Rhode Islands New Student Orientation Program. This includes crisis management, preparation for each session, the check-in process, and how staff respond to both students and families needs. Activities/Resources: Shadow Family Program Coordinators and aid them in the check-in process, set up for the activities fair, and answering the families questions and concerns about their students and the University. Ask Management and Coordinators questions about their work including hours, an average day, workload, benefits of the job, and challenges they face in order to gain a stronger perspective on the program. Observe Orientation staff including management, coordinators, family coordinators, and faculty head coordinators and their interactions with the students and families as well as how they handle crises both big and small. Evidence: A narrative on the lessons and experiences I have taken away from this experience along with ideas on how to improve the program. Activities/Resources: Go through the page and see what needs to be updated for the 2014-15 academic year Create an Excel Document in which I inventory the webpages current contents and what needs to be updated, deleted, added, and reused Update documents and create some of those which must be created. Objective: Research ideas for a new blog that will be published through the Office of New Student Programs outlining how parents can best support their students during their first year away from home. This blog will follow the general timeline of students while they are adjusting to college week by week. For example, the first post might be on how families can support their students while they experience homesickness. Activities/Resources: Research general reactions and difficulties students face during their first year away from home and at college. Highlight different academic, involvement, social, and stress issues faced by first year students during their freshman year. Construct a timeline of topics highlighting struggles first year student face week by week so that my supervisors can create a blog offering ideas of how their families can support their students and help them succeed. Evidence: The timeline of topics that can be used for the blog. Internship Details Internship Duties: Help finalize the URI 101 syllabus. Shadow and help with the Family Program for Orientation. Research New Student Programs at other Universities and look for ways to incorporate new programs at URI. Update the URI 101 Website. Research ways that parents can help their student succeed during their first year at URI. Internship Evaluation Methods: Ask Kristina for her thoughts on my work ethic. Always ask for more projects when I complete each project. Internship works days/hours: Monday and Friday 10 hours (some weeks 3 days)
