Motivational letter regarding ESONN Summer School 2014

I am part of the Center for Nanostructured Graphene (CNG), a Center of Excellence at the Department of
Micro- and Nanotechnology (DTU Nanotech) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). CNG focusses
on basic research, but all projects have long-term perspectives which target future applications. The center
is engaged in various research fields including nanofabrication, experimental physics, and condensed
matter/quantum physics. The center aims to develop a broader understanding through interdisciplinary
collaborations. Being part of the theoretical aspect of the center, the scope of the Summer School is in
excellent agreement with the skills required during my PhD, by providing insight and hands-on experience
within many aspects of nanotechnology.
My PhD is a theoretical study of the magnetic properties of nanostructured graphene (Magnetic
Properties of Nanostructured Graphene Systems). The project will mainly focus on implementing state of
the art computing techniques to perform large-scale simulations of magnetic properties such as spin
polarization, local magnetic moments, and the quantum Hall effect for periodically perforated sheets and
impurity adsorbed sheets. This project will be focused on electronic transport under magnetic conditions
and the practical work Quantum transport simulation: Non-Equilibrium-Greens Functions methods
would be highly relevant and provide great experience in this aspect. Experimentally the implementation of
this theoretical work would require the measuring of small-scale electronic transport and various magnetic
effects, from which the two practical works Electromigration technique to realize a single - molecule
transistor and Magnetoresistive Effects in Magnetic Heterostructures would provide great insight.
