Competency 6: Reflection
SEI 650

The products that I chose for competency #6 are meant to show my
knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices and programs.
The first product that I chose was 5 Activity plans that I created in SEI 525 in
the Fall of 2012. I created, implemented and evaluated these activities based on
embedded instruction for a targeted behavior and learning outcomes for all the
children involved in the activity. In order to create these activities I needed to have
a firm understanding of developmentally appropriate activates for children in the
age range of the classroom including any children with developmental delays. This
product represents my ability to look at the children in my classroom and develop
learning activities that were designed at their level.
The second product that I have chosen to represent my knowledge of
developmentally appropriate practices and programs was completed in SEI 529 in
the Spring of 2013. For this class I had to develop 5 literacy rich activities using the
Project Approach format. The 5 activities I made were in line with the Maine Early
Learning Guidelines for children ages 3-5. I had to really design the project around
what the children were interested in and where they were developmentally and
what did I want them to learn from the activities. Aligning my goals with the Early
Learning guidelines reinforce how I had to think at a developmentally appropriate
level.
The third product that I chose was completed in SEI 523 in the Fall of 2013.
This activity was to write 10 functional outcomes for the child and family based on
routines based early-intervention. This product really had me think about
developmentally appropriate outcomes for the child that was inline with the needs
of the family. It was difficult to find that balance and took a lot of background
knowledge of the family and child to be able to determine what was possible for the
family to do.
The forth and final product was completed in SEI 513 in Spring of 2014. This
activity not only showed how I was able to design a curriculum that was
developmentally appropriate for the age group in my class but I was able to do so
based off from an assessment. I gave the children a baseline assessment to find out
there knowledge in math. Based on the scores and knowledge I gathered during the
assessment I was able to create a curriculum that addressed the needs I had found
out in the assessment. This assignment forced me to look at what skills needed
strengthening and to find activities that would strengthen those skills and was
developmentally appropriate for the students, keeping in mind any delays or
behavior modifications that needed to be done.
