I like that you included information about a pain goal - I think we need to have the reading level checked as there are lots of big
words in there for patients with low reading ability. I think the patient education committee can help with that. Let us know how the

You have done a good job of creating the tool.

Clark and I looked it over and I volunteered to send you the comments. I debated whether to just
send you general comments in an email, or edit the Tool. I chose to edit the tool. I know you
wanted to include the pain levels and the associated meds, but Clark and I felt there was too much
to list on one page for that type of information. We also felt strongly that there should be
information about a Pain (Comfort-Function) Goal. (Epic uses Pain Goal and WILDA card uses

Regina Fink has asked me to email you regarding a patient education tool I've been
developing to help teach patients about pain. The current version is attached. Regina has
suggested that you may have some suggestions regarding naming specific medications, brand
name vs. generic, plus any other suggestions you may have. I'd greatly value any feedback
you can offer.

Also, I hate to rush you, but in order for me to get this on the Patient Education Committee's
March agenda, I have to send a finalized tool to them by February 15th. If you can possibly
give me your feedback by Wednesday, February 12th, that would be very helpful.

Aurora--
I wonder if you have had a chance to run this by Rob Montgomery and Clark Lyda - both on the
acute pain service. They deal a lot with patients and may be able to shed some light on the
reviewer's thoughts and especially about names of medications. I can understand your
concerns but wonder if they may have a different perspective.
I know Rob has always said to me that sometimes a pain relief/comfort goal of a "0" may not
be appropriate. I know we are running out of space but wonder if there is a way to let
patients know we may not be able to relieve all their pain.
I have not other edits or thoughts.

All,

I received some feedback from the Pain Committee--all positive!--and have incorporated the
most frequently made suggestion into the education tool; namely, that the alternative
therapies be bulleted for easier reading by the patients (and to help them stand out).

Other suggestions that were made that I did not include:
1) Use the brand names of the drugs in addition to the generic. I felt that this would get
really confusing for patients. I think its better to just stick with one name, and the one that
most of us are likely to use, and also avoid listing the combination drugs like percocet,
vicodin, etc.
2) Don't list specific drugs, just classes or routes in order to avoid specific patient
requests and "drug seeking" behaviors. I felt this could also be confusing, as most laymen
don't necessarily understand terms like NSAID or narcotic, but most people know what tylenol
or morphine are. Also, routes aren't necessarily indicative of strength of medication, but going
into the whole IV vs PO thing starts a whole new discussion with patients. Not that the
discussion is a bad thing, but maybe not the role of this teaching tool.
Regarding drug seeking patients, I think most patients who are truly seeking already know
what drugs they want. I don't think listing their specific names on this tool will lead to an
increase in that behavior.

Please take a look and give me any final suggestions you have. Or, if you believe the
suggestions that were made that I did not incorporate have merit, let me know and we can
discuss further. I'd like to send the tool to the Patient Education Committee this week, if
everyone approves.
