Opening class

Introduce Procedure
Today we will discuss how to open class. Why is this necessary? What steps are needed and in
what order?

Model
walk in quietly, sign in at the door.
read the board and be class ready (arrival steps)
warm up in journal
Discussion/clarification of what is on the board Itinerary and review from yesterday

Consequences
What will happen if this procedure is not followed?
We will miss out on class time= loosing instruction time = fall behind in lesson.
Journal entries count as 10 pts of daily grades and will be graded at the end of each week.

Rewards
Full class time = gaining instruction time = getting ahead of schedule = possible bonus time for
help on homework.

Closing class
Introduce Procedure
Today we will discuss how to close class. Why is this necessary? What steps are needed and in
what order?

Model
final questions/ discussion,
exit slips- completion and turn in,
return materials,(departure steps)
sit quietly and wait for teacher dismissal

Consequences
What will happen if this procedure is not followed?
If the procedure is not followed I may ask students to repeat the steps until they are satisfactory.
Exit slip questions will be graded for content/ completion. The exit slip is worth a percentage of
your daily grade (10pts/100).

Rewards
Dont have to repeat the steps. Leave class on time. The exit slips will help me to gage where
students are on the daily progress. Some of the questions will be used for future activity planning
as well.
Favorite song might be used in a class game name that tune to gain extra points on a grade.

A song you like is:
Opening class
1) Arrival steps (before the bell) 2) Warm-ups are done with the first 5 10 minutes of
class. Students write them in their journals from the board.

3) Discussion/clarification of what is on the board Itinerary.

Closing class
1) Exit slips - completed with the last 5 10 minutes 2) Departure steps (last 2 minutes)
of class and turned into Exit slip box.

3) Teacher dismissal

10pts each for opening and closing procedures= 20 pts daily grade.

Exit Slips in class are also effective way to assess students understanding of new or old
concepts. Exits slips can be a ticket out of the class, not homework. Give students time to answer
it before the end of class. They can be used for a quick formative assessment. You can quickly
see if students understand what they are learning.
Other fun questions for the close of class:
How would you explain a concept from today to someone half way around the world?
How would you explain a concept from today to a younger sibling?
