Algebra 1
_________________________________________________
According to Florida Department of Education, students are required to take
Algebra to graduate from high school.
In order to assistance students in the course, Florida Virtual School developed an app
for Apple products and android devices. This review will determine if the app is
meeting the requirements set forth by Florida Standards.
MA.912.A.1.8 Use the zero product property of real numbers in a variety of
contexts to identify solutions to equations.
MA.912.A.2.3 Describe the concept of a function, use function notation,
determine whether a given relation is a function, and link equations to
functions.
MA.912.A.2.4 Determine the domain and range of a relation.
MA.912.A.2.13 Solve real-world problems involving relations and functions.
MA.912.A.3.1 Solve linear equations in one variable that include simplifying
algebraic expressions.
MA.912.A.3.2 Identify and apply the distributive, associative, and commutative
properties of real numbers and the properties of equality.
MA.912.A.3.3 Solve literal equations for a specified variable.
MA.912.A.3.4 Solve and graph simple and compound inequalities in one variable,
and be able to justify each step in a solution
MA.912.A.3.5 Symbolically represent and solve multi-step and real-world
applications that involve linear equations and inequalities.
MA.912.A.3.7 Rewrite equations of a line into slope-intercept form and standard
form.

After reviewing the app and the standards listed above, I believe more
information and questions are needed in order for students to establish proficiency in
solving multi-step and real-world applications. Also the app did not address the
rewriting of slope intercept. To further engage students, a demonstration and step by
step procedure of the problems would benefit the students in mastery of the course.
The app contains 13 topics and 418 questions. The questions range in from low to high
complexity while most seem to be in the low to mid level of complexity range.
One issue I found with this app was the Study Aid Mode. An explanation would be
helpful for students as they enter the app and to establish what is available for them
while using the app (formulas/definitions). Students must click on each Icon for an
explanation of the tool. I believe it would be beneficial and more user friendly for
students to have an introduction to the app.
