Tell us a little about the band for those who have not heard of you. We are a black metal band from Auckland with slow ambient melodies and fast technical riffs. What inspired you guys to put together a Black Metal band in the first place? We loved the music and lifestyle of biack metal and just wanted to piay it. It felt unique to us because it was something different in the metal scene There are not many NZ BM bands who do the full corpse paint image. What made you decide to use corpse paint? They catch Jenifer one day and strip her naked for the village idiot PF (Matthew) and rape her. Jennifer is later attacked and raped @ further two times by the four segenerates, and her novel is also destroyed. But Jennifer slowly recovers and in her now-twisted, psychotic mind, she then begins to seek revenge on the four men who raped her. REVIEW by Brendon Williams if you've seen this film and found it enjoyable, you're probably a very Sick person and should seek some help right away. If you haven't seen it yet, let me inform you what i's all about. Most of the movie is based around the lead up to, and eventual repeated brutal gang raping of the main character, a woman who has taken a holiday in a secluded area in order to write @ book. Now, those of you who are used to those Hollywood styie rape scenes ere probably thinking that so far the fim doesn't sound all that bed, But the way the scenes are carried out are very realistic, shocking, and unpleasant in the extreme. | have to congratulate the director, Meit Zarchi far creating some of the most disgustingly memorable movie scenes ever. Then the woman gets her revenge! Some quite funny, entertaining stuff here (she slices one offenders penis off while he's in the bathtub!) and ‘once you Get over the jolt of the rane scenes, the revenge portion of the movie isnt too bad Nevertheless, | would nat recommend anyone to watch this film unless they are a hard-cut cult horror fan Scored points for being memorable and shocking Lost points for being weak in every other department. raTinG: GEER ‘She gets gang raped. 3 times. DS aa Sav oS DEF LEPPARD Yeah! Mercury 2006, CD How long can you play “parly rock” and sing songs about girs? | guess after a certain point all this stuff becomes sort of irrelevant. Not te mention that today's partying teenagers are more likely to listen to hop than Bryan Adams and Def Leppard. Ti changed and Def Leopard changed as well. Actually, changed to the point where they don't sound lke themselves anymore (although admittedly, it is an album of cover material). It's stil a high-class rack record, which makes it easier to agpreciate but the days when their big hits smashed the charts are gone. Yet its a wel-preduced aloum, done by professionals. The problem is, | don't really see the point anymore. BEBEEE Review by Max Thrasher ’ SLAYER fs Christ Illusion +. "., Warner Bros / Wea 1 2006, CD This new Slayer album brings the retum of Dave Lombardo on drums, which is @ good thing, because he was the drummer during the best part af Slayers career (Reign In Blood, South Cf Heaven, and Seasons in The Abyss era). However, Christ is not an instant classic, It lacks any great songs. It sounds just like Slayer, but minus the Zor 3 absolute killer tracks that always used to be present in the band's earlier works. For thase pining for a retum to the old Slayer, check it out because it's stil their best since “Seasons In The Abyss,” however, ifs stil nowhere near as good, and if you are a casual Slayer fan, stick to the classics, EEEEEEE Review by Brendon Williams a EDENBRIDGE |. The Grand Design Massacre 2006, CD Oh ged, | don't even know where ta start, jut at ieast we have a bit of variety in this month's reviews! Another band dragging along the trails of Within ‘Temptation and Nightwish. Edenbridge is a bit older than other similar acts, yet young enough to believe that riding on someone else's coat tails could lead to anything. Well-produeed, well-performed musie which on @ good night puts you in a sleepy moad (and on a Grunken night gives you a light headache) with all Piano parts, nottoo-offensive guitars and female vocals. Plus | couldn’ get rid of a feeling that | already heard it all in some movie. For fans of female-fronted PoweriGothic Metal only. BEEBE: Review by Max Thrasher GWAR Beyond Hell Rte / Drt 2006, CD GWAR used to be known solely as a comedy meta act. But anyone who has heard this album (or either of their last 2 stucio efforts) can attest to the fact that these days, GWAR's music is of an extremely high quality. The production, performance, and composition is on an entirely different level to early GWAR albums. The vocals stil contain 4 good dose of humor. However, | must say that I do miss the old days of outright comedy songs like “Fuckin’ An Animal,” and the anthemic greats like “Sick Of You" and “Meat Sandwich.” Regardiess of that, this is stll another great GWAR release. KRISS HADES The Wind Of Orion Pyramids Of War Moder Invasion 2006, CD Enter guitanst of legendary Sadistik Exekution with his solo effort. As | sad, its exremely noisy and incoherent, even though you can sometmes hear some pretty cool passages. On the other hand, tracks like the T3-minute “Final Execution” contain very litte guitars, which make no sense. considering it's on a guitarist's solo album. Altogether, it sounds like somebody warming up in a rehearsal room, before the rest of the band showed up and that just doesn't eut it. Musically - absolute zero GE Review by Max Thrasher ™) CRADLE OF FILTH i) Thornography Roadrunner Records 2006, CD Cradle Of Filth. Probably the biggest selling extreme metal act in the word, and one of the only to successfully cross into mainstream territory. The new album, “Thamography" is good stuff; a little more on the beavy metal side this time around, and with some well worked innovations to the Cradle OF Filth sound throughout. The instant memorable track for me was “Tonight in Flames’ - the chorus is sung, and is extremely catchy. Iam always very impressed when a hand does what COF have done here... presenting the material you expect, then succeeding in taking their sound further, giving the audience something new without betraying the original concept and sound. EEEEEEEE) Review by Brendon Williams 10 INSOMNIUM Above The Weeping World Candlelight 2006, CD Finally something interesting! The third album from Insomnium is @ very good example of Finnish Metal ‘Cold, stormy but also melodic music, along the lines of earlier Amorphis and in Flames. The songs somehow remind me of the way this stuff was done n the 90's, but that's actually a compliment. You know, the good old "RRRROQOOAAAARRRR’ thing and the harmony guitars, before everybody started cutting their hair and paying more attention to production, than actual music. fd say Insomnium ‘would go Very well with the people who bought the new albums of Keep Of Kalessin and Runic, but fans of old-schoo! They have remained at the forefront of deathigore metal ever since their inception. Now, with their tour of New Zealand days away, we speak exclusively with bassist Alex Webster. Let's start with the latest album "Kill" - It's been out for a while now. Tell us your impression of the album now it's locked into Cannibal Corpse's history. fe all probably feel it is our best work so far. The songwriting and production tumed out really well this time in our opinions. Our fans might ike various other albums we've done better, but for us Kill is probably the best so far. Gut well do our very best to make sure the next one is even heavier, ‘with better songs and production. What inspired the more technical direction of late? And is there any chance of seeing the more crazy tracks such as ‘Frantic Disembowelment’ played live at same point? I've been interested in the more ‘tech’ type stuff for quite a while now, and Pat is a very technical player and ‘writer. | think between the two of us the songs we write for Cannibal have been increasingly more complex and challenging from album to album, and it's mainly because thats the kind of music we enjoy playing. We're definitely not trying to prove we're more technical than other bands, because of course there are a lot of bands that are more tech than we are. re just writing the heaviest songs we can, and quite often they wind up being complex and challenging. But well write a simple song foo, as long as it's heavy as fuck As for playing the more technical sangs live, we'll da a couple of the tougher anes like “Murder Worship* or “Make Them Suffer’, but we haven't added “Frantic Disemboweiment" to the set because there are a few vocal parts that George felt weren't sounding up to par at practice. That's a heavily requested song, so hopefully we'll get it in the set sooner or later. ee re eee Ld 15 What do you think has been the most important piece of Cannibal Corpse's history so far? That's a tough one, because our career is built on 3 number of impartant things, some due to hard work, and some pure luck. | think when we switched singers that that was an important fuming paint for the band. All of the band member changes have been important, and hopefully have improved our band, But anyway, maybe the most important piece of our history is stil ecming, who knows? What, in your opinion, is the definitive Cannibal Corpse song? Hmmm.."Hammer Smashed Face” would probably be the best choice. Cannibal Corpse is recognized not only as being true innovators and pioneers in Metal, but also you are acknowledged as the number one seller of death metal albums worldwide. What advise would you give to budding musicians who would like to one day have their band reach similar heights? Just play the music you love, and have fun. If you succeed, it wan't be without a great deal of hard work and luck. | would say just have fun jamming music you love, and maybe something good will happen The worst thing that can happen is that you'll have a great fime jamming, and that's obviously not bad at all Generally, what do you think about modern death metal? Is the scene, the sound and the performance any different now from what it was, say, 15 years ago? The quality of death metal has improved a great deal So many of the newer bands are starting out at such a high level, t's really mind blowing, especially for like us who were around in the beginning ¥ it was all 30 primitive. | think it's really oreat that there are all of these killer younger bands adding life to the scene. if the quality of death metal continues to grow the way it has aver recent years, | believe that death metal's popularity will also grow. I've got to belie that there will always be an audience for high qual music, and the death metal of today is the highest quailty it's ever been. What's your personal favorite book, T¥ show and movie of all time? My favorite book is 1994 by George Onwell. The Sopranos is one of my all time favorite TV shows. As for movies there's so many, i's hard to pick one. Maybe Goodfellas, Fargo, or The Shining Do your girlfriends | wives dig CC music and {most importantly) lyrics? My wife likes our stuff a lot. | don't know about the other guys’ women, but mine is into Cannibal, for sure. She thinks the iyrics are fucking disgusting, but then again, who doesn't? Tell us a little about the touring lifestyle... Is it all sex, drugs and rock ‘n' rail? What sort of things do you guys get up to when on tour? Well, there's a litte bit of drinking, sometimes a lot, but ‘usually just 2 moderate amount. For me personally, I rarely get crunk on tour. Most of the time on the four bus, we just hang out and have a few beers and watch movies or listen to. music. Our groupie days are long sinee past, as we're all settled nto ong term relationships with our wives or ginfriends. The current line-up... how is it all working out? Has the departure of Jack Owen to Deicide had any long term impact on the band? | think that our eurent live show and the album Kil can answer this question better than any words | could say. You are a band still heavily affected by censorship and protest to your music. What do you think about the negative attention, and the people who try and stop your music? | think that if they understood that we approach our lyrics the way a filmmaker or novelist approaches a horror movie or novel, they might be less inelined ta fuck with us. Either way, | think their efforts have been a waste of fime, in that our fans generally seem to understand where we're coming from, and know that we don't advocate the violent acts described in ‘our songs. It has also been a waste of their time in that they've had very little negative effect on our career. Actually, they may have inadvertently helped our career, by giving us ‘ree publicity I have seen a few newspaper clippings from Australia with nutjobs attempting to block your access to Australia, What is your comment on these people, and have you been having any trouble with visas? Again, | think that if they did more research about the band, they would stop their quest fo censor us. To my knowledge, we have had na problems obtaining our visas. What do you expect from the NZ part of your tour? And what can NZ expect from Cannibal Corpse? We don’t know what to expect, as this will be the first time we've playing in New Zealand. We're hoping for some senous mayhem in the pits at the shows, that’s for sure! As for us, we plan on giving you guys the most intense live show we are capable of. ft will be 75 minutes of pure sonic brutality! Out of all of your classic albums, which one in particular do you think is a crime for metal fans ‘to not have in their CD collection, and why? Well, | guess the Bleeding is pretty mandatory for any Cannibal Corpse fan. That album was really the first one where things began to get really tight and professional performance-wise, And it has some of our catchiest songs too. ‘Thank you for the interview. Your final message to the NZ fans of Cannibal Corpse please! ‘Thanks to you guys for the interview! And to our fans in New Zealand, we want to say thank you for the support, and we hope to see you all at the shows we piay in October! eee eae eed a4 Pa yen hl THE ARE ATTACH, GROOME GUIDE AND SOUNDWORKS present RUCLARD at 4:20 373.
