DISTRICT EQUITY LEADERSHIP TEAM

ADVISORY (DELTA)
Equity Expectations of District and Sites Beginning 2013-14
Goals/Actions 2013/2014
Professional Development
Site professional development committees ensure that
racial/equity-related activities are included in site professional
development days/times. Examples include but are not limited
to:
o Hosting a Panel of African-American adults who answer
questions from and discuss race-related questions with
staff
o Examining disaggregated site-level/classroom data by race
to plan instruction
o Reflecting on and implementing strategies to build
relationships with students of color and with their parents
o Honoring multiple learning styles by implementing
different strategies and through the differentiation of
content, process and product.

Each sites Professional Development Committee will include at
least one member from the e- team.
PLC logs from each PLC provide evidence of addressing the
question of racialized educational disparities.
Site improvement goals are written to address racialized
educational disparities
Parental Involvement
Gather more feedback from parents of color in an effort to make
sites more culturally competent; what families of color would
like schools and the district to do for parent involvement
Increase involvement of parents of color across the district and
at each site
Invite and ensure at least one parent/guardian-of-color is on
each sites parent leadership group (i.e. site council, PTSO,
PTAO, etc.)
Each site will:
o have expectations that staff make personal contacts to
parents, especially those of color, to build positive
relationships
o make the Pearson Family webpage obvious and available
(note: recently added ELL information and activities)
o Provide several family events throughout the year that
celebrate student successes. (i.e. student showcase nights,
concerts, or other ways of bringing parents and
community in to see student work)
o Place student work on websites (video streaming, scanned
art, or other work)
o make intentional attempts to have volunteers of color
visible in the schools
o disseminate MN content standards via website postings,
share at parent meetings and curriculum informational
sessions
o disseminate disaggregated MN Comprehensive
Assessment (MCA) achievement results for each site
o direct parents to resources such as MN Parent Center at
PACER
o give tools to parents on how to monitor their childs
progress through accessing Power School Parent Access
link, and seek parents who are unable to use the link and
remove the barriers if unable to access (ie Homeless
families may be eligible for a McKinney- Vento computer
with internet access: contact Tami Reynolds)
o incorporate a school system when planning parent
involvement (events/information) to include the need for
interpreters, document translations and parent liaison
phone calls by appropriate language needs
Student Discipline
Each school will reduce the TOTAL number of discipline incidents
by 5% compared to its total number for the previous year.
Each school will reduce the total PERCENTAGE of Black students
involved in disciplinary incidents by 10% points.
o Currently of all discipline incidents in the district, 60-65%
involves Black students, whereas 21% of total enrollment
is Black. This goal addresses the discrepancy in enrollment
versus discipline for Black students.
o In 2013-14, this goal will be analyzed district-wide (not by
school), compared to 2012- 13 percentages.
o For 2014-15, each school will use 2013-14 data as baseline
and set goals accordingly.
Strategies to achieve this goal include but are not limited to:
o Counseling
o Work to find the cause of a behavior issue as part of a
sites discipline process
o Mediation circles and peer mediation
o Professional development in and implementing restorative
justice
o Professional development for teachers and administrators
in programs such as Boys Town
o Professional development in and implementing
Responsive Classroom or Developmental Design
o Supporting individual teachers to build relationships with
students when teacher data is higher than the school
average for disciplining students
o Enroll staff from each site to attend Pacific Education
Groups training on Black Boys and Discipline during the
2013/14 school year.
District Support
District improvement goals are written to address racialized

who receive free or reduced lunch
Review and ensure equity in proportion to percentage of
students in poverty in financial and staff allocations to all
schools
Gather more feedback from parents of color in an effort to make
sites more culturally competent; what families of color would
like schools and the district to do for parent involvement
Research how to engage parents of color though outreach
Collect student feedback on school climate with respect to the
cultural competence of staff, caring adult at school, etc.
