INTRODUCTION

1. Astrology is both a science and an art. It is science in the sense that it is based on the pure science of astronomy

and mathematics and an art in the

sense that

it requires

sufficient practice to give adequate results. The mathe- matical portion of-astrology is comparatively easier, as most of its requirements are already available to us with- out much labour. Unlike old days, an astrologer is not called upon these days, to work out the longitudes of the heavenly bodies himself. These are easily available in an up-to-date form in modern ephemeris, and only have to

be culled out. But the art

much time, constant practice and devoted attention

2. While writing this work it has been presumed that the student is already familiar with the most elementary knowledge concerning astrology such as the names of the 12 signs, names of planets etc. Barring such type of most

elementary knowledge all other essential rules of astrology

have

been incorporated

in

this

work

to prepare the

student

for

the

actual

task

of interpretation of a birth

chart.

i. Care has been taken that while laying down the rules of the science the authority of the standard texts is not lost sight of. For every rule supporting references has been cited from such standard works as Brihat Parashar Horoshastra, Brihat Jatak, Phal Deepika, Uttar Kalamrit, Sarvarth Chintamani prashna Marg, Bhavartha Ranakar, Saravali, Jatak Parijat, Chandra Kala Nadi etc.

of the aspects of

actual task of prediction.

\6. A practical knowledge in the art of prediction is possible only when the application of the astrological laws is understood by reference to the horoscopes of peoples from all walks of life. In order, therefore, to impart practical knowledge to the student a vast number of birth charts belonging to prominent personalities have been included in this study. These birth charts have been

from different angles such as longevity, health,

wealth, ruling powers, social service, comfortable living, luxuries and the line of profession, and with reference to the practical application of the rules already learnt in in the matter. The idea of such a study has been to create the ability in students to ascertain for themselves the

9. Thus the book is "prediction" oriented and is intended to enable students to have all the material in one place so as to facilitate their attempts at prediction. It is hoped the book will serve this special purpose for which it has been written.

Rules - Traced and Explained

Retrograde Planets are strong

All Retrograde Planets should be considered as strong.

The benefit of such a strength, of course, goes to the bouse which the retrograde planet owns. The results may therefore depend on the fact whether it owns a good house and is strong, in which case the house involved benefits. When the

Retrograde planet is Lord of an evil house it, of course, increases the evil nature thereof; Keeping in view the fact that Jupiter owns a good house the following Shloka No. 40 of

(ii) In this context it may be added that exahalted Jupiter, whatever its merits, is generally bad for the longevity of the relation represented by the house in which its sign Sagittarius falls, particularly in cases in which Jupiter in such a position is afflicted too. In fact Saturn also acts for "Species" as such of animals. For example if Saturn occupies the sign Sagittarius in the 6th house, then Jupiter Lord of the 6th house would represent a horse. This fact may further be indicative of earning from horses (or races) if Jupiter has an intimate relation with the lagna and its

i.e. Jf mars is in the 7th house of the birth chart' the native suffers from blood and bile troubles. In cases where a planet represents both, it naturally bocomes more representative of blood, and if it is afflicted brings about blood trouble in more severe a manner. Mars in the sign of

Moon i. e. cancer makes Moon a pucca representative of blood, Similarly Moon in the sign of mats, say scorpio, in lagna makes mars a pucca representative of blood, which of course is polluted, diseased etc., if the Moon or mars, as the case may be, is afflicted by Rahu and Saturn-factors of disease. When there is such an affliction of Moon or mars and Mercury too is in any of the lagnas or is lord of any of the lagnas and is afflicted by Rahu and or Saturn, the trouble spreads to skin as well and this becomes a case of Leprosy. Cause of Divorce,

Abdication Sanyas etc.

Sun, Saturn and Rahu are the three main causes for sepera- tion, forsaking, leaving, etc. This seperation may take the shape of divorce, or abdication or sanyas but is essentially the result of the seperative influence of the above noted three planets. In regard to Sun J.P. Shloka 23 Chapter 16 opines in regard to its location in the 7th house as under :

i.e.

if Sun

occupies

the

7th house of the birth chart

of a

women she will be given up by her husband i.e. divorced etc.

Rahu and Saturn also play the part of severance. of Chapter 5 of Jatak Parijat states that :

Shloka 93

faqera srfe

i.e. if Rahu Saturn and Mercury are situated together in the 10th house, the hands are severed. Severance, it may be added, is here the result of the seperative influence of Saturn and Rahu on Mercury which stands for the arm. It is signifi- cant to note that this evil yoga has occurred in the bth from 3rd i.e. the death house of arms :

Jaimini Sutra 12 of 1/4 is More explicit.

It says :

Why has the condition of their location in kendra been imposed

is an interesting question. ' The answer is that planets bv their

location in kendra influence the lagna. When the said affliction will inflwence lagna too, directly another factor standing for brain will be involved in affliction, lending, weight to the onset of the disease. We will see in the case of study of the sixth house

(see rule 28), that a condition of the location in kendra was imposed there too, the idea was to involve the influence of restriction on the self represented by lagna. (2) Moon add Mercury represent the emotional and rational powers respecti- vely. The fourth house is one of emotions and the first and 5th of rational thinking. Thus a complete yoga for mental derangement or lunacy would be formed only when all these factors are involved. That is why we have opened thus in "Hora Shatak"

i.e. The fourth house and Moon denote the emotional side of man. Mercury and the fifth house denote the rational faculties of man. When both the emotional and the intellectual faculties of man are shocked, disturbed and reduced, lunacy results. That is the reason why when these factors are afflicted by malefic planets (by association or aspect) madness comes to be in evidence.

Traits of first House

The first house of the horoscope is designated by many terms, one of which is "janma" i.e. birth. This name is very appropriate as the very first event that happens to thesoul with its advent into this world is his very birth. Astrology has, therefore, asscoiated birth and all things intimately connected with birth with the first house - the lagna or ascendant. The place at which a birth takes place, i. e. whether it is in air, on earth, below earth, in water etc- Is considered and decided by a study of the first house, For example the author of'deva kerala" writes in shloka No. 848 at page 78.

The 6th house by its association with others

Similarly if the lord of the lagna, in company of the lord of 6th and Saturn is located in kendra or kona the man gets impri- soned. We thus see that the 6th house reduces the functions of the party with which associated. When associated with representative factors of wife it has reduced considerably, her power as a woman to procreate and when associated with lagna it has, in collaboration with another factor for reduction, reduced and restricted the movements of the body leading to "imprisonment." Thus 6th house and its Lord act as restricting influences. Parashar also expresses the same princi- ple when it says in 24-63 bphs.

The 10th house represents the govt. The 12th house being 3rd from the 10th would therefore, represent the arms of govt. i.e. means of execution of the intentions of govt. Prediction thro : Definition & Corelation

Prediction in Astrology is facilitated

if we can translate the

problem under consideration into Astrological factors and then

proceed to examine each of those factor. For example in cases of lunacy or mental derangement, we know that this disease results from the derangement of brain as well as through

the shock to the emotional side of our being. We have, there- fore, to examine such factors in the birth chart as stand for the emotions and the brain. Now Ihe brain is represented in Astrology by the first house, its Lord the 5th house, its Lord and the planet Mercury. Similarly emotions are represented by the 4th house, its Lord and the planet Moon. Thus when the factors enumerated above are afflicted lunacy results.

Educational Attainments

Even in texts there is confusion in regard to the house to be considered for academic education. Some are of the opinion that it relates to the 2nd house, others opine that the house of education is 4th, while there are still others who hold that 5th house is the house of education. We personally think that the consensus is in favour of the 2nd house. Authors who have stated the 4th as the house of education have also mentioned the 2nd house also as one of education. The author of phal Deepika is most clear and explicit on this point. He says in XVJ-5.

Cordiality

There are two main rules for determining cordiality between two relations as seen from the horoscope of any one person. The first rule is that if the Lord of the house of the relation concerned is strong and so also is the significator of that relation, there will be cordiality between the subject and his relation involved. For example see the following :

i.e. If the Lord of the 9th house from lagna is full of strength (by house position, sign position, association aspect etc) and so also is the karka i. e. Significator of father (Sun) the subject will be obedient to his father. (2) The 2nd rule for cordiality is that the two planets involved should not be located in 6th, 8th position from each another or the lagna etc. The following Shloka No. 29 from Chapter 20 of phal deepika is relevant.

(2) But in actual life we see that a birth is bastard inspite of Jupiter's influence on the lagna factors stated. For example* here is the horoscope of a person who is bastard. It would be seen that Jupiter is in the same sign as Sun and is therefore, influencing it.

50

Thus the influence of Jupiter on lagna factors is not in con-

bastard. Where is the snag ?

The snag lies in Jupiter himself. W e consider that the framer of the above Shloka when he compiled the rule had in his mind a Jupiter that was unsallied—a Jupitor that by his purity could legalise the birth. But what if Jupiter himself is subjected to an influence that makes it a polluted instrument hardly fit to do the job expected of it ? In such a case we think Jupiter not only does not legalise the birth, but on the contrary, it helps in making the birth alien or bastard! Examining jupiter in the horoscope we notice that it is lord of the sign occupied by Rahu and as such is spoiled, for it is well known that of all the plantes Jupiter is spoiled by Rahu the most. Again Ketu is fully aspecting Jupiter by 9th aspect. In so aspecting it is also throwing the malefic and lowering influence, qf saturn on Jupiter (see rule 14). Then again note another interesting fact that mercury in this horoscope is the lord of the 6th house both from the Igana and the chandra lagna. Being a house of aliens mercury acts considerably in giving to Jupiter an alien character. We think these Influe- nces on Jupiter are sufficient to change him from a legalising instrument into an instrument of alien nature. Such an alien Jupiter will, of course, make the birth a bastard one due to its influence. Strange but true. We must, therefore, be cautious that when we see the role of Juptier in any horoscope we gave it the importance it deserves in the horoscope and no more. No over rating of its qualities should be justified.

Rule No. 47 The Principle of "Bhavat Bhavam"

There is ample evidence in texts to suggest clearlythat a house as far removed from a particular house as the latter is from the lagna acts like the former house. For example, the 5th house from the lagna is the house of progeny. On the basis of the above principle of "Bhavat Bhavam" the house 5th to 5th i.e. 9th would be as much relevant to a consideration of progeny as the 5th house itself. Similarly father is considered from the 9th house in a horoscope. Hence according to the above principle of "Bhavat Bhavam" the house 9th to 9th i.e. the

These are also considered as strong if their lords aspect them, particularly when the lord of the lagna or any of its signs is also aspected by or is associated with a benefic planet.

Relation or yoga. Now Jupiter in the case of taurus nativities is lord of the 8th and 11th house—both declared bad by Parashar. Mercury is lord of 2nd and 5th houses both good. Why should Mercury of all planets change the nature of bad jupiter into a good Jupiter instead of himself becoming bad. The point is that this is not the correct way to argue. According to "Bhavarth Ratnakar" the, principle of similarity should be applied here and the fact noted that while Jupiter

Obviously the associa- tion together of two factors for wealth is the rationale behind the good results of this yoga for finance. The aspect of saturn

The principle of similarity has constantly been utilized

by Bhavarth

Ratnakar for it states in the case of leo nativities:
