Most alternative rock videos typically contain each of the band members playing their instruments or singing. They can also sometimes contain live footage from their concerts. Their costumes tend to be very casual and everyday looking, and each band member is shown playing their specific instrument for example, drummer, guitarist, singer etc The lead singer is often shown the most in alternative rock music videos as they are the ones that the audience recognise the most. The lead singer will be shown with a microphone normally stood up or jumping/dancing around. Some alternative rock videos are sometimes in black and white instead of colour. How are you going to meet these conventions in your video? Style (in-concert and as live footage; animation (stop motion, digital); interpretative; narrative; impressionist; surrealist; pastiche; parody; referencing; homage) For my music video, I plan to use a lot of live footage as it is a good convention to use and shows all of the band members together and on their own. It also shows each band member with the instrument that they play. Costume The costumes I will use in my music video will be the same conventions of other alternative rock music videos. I will have every day/casual outfits such as just jeans, tshirt and a jacket which is casual. This will meet conventions of other music videos and want to keep it as realistically looking as possible. Lighting The lighting in my music video will vary, as I will be using live footage to meet these conventions the lighting will be quite dark and there will be stage lights flashing. When I am filming outside it will be a lot lighter but not too light as I will also be filming in a tube station. Locations For the locations of my music video, I plan to shoot in the city of Lonon, this is because it is where I will find crowds of people, busses, trains, taxis etcMy aim of the music video is to show a journey to a concert in London therefore shooting in and around London is ideal to meet the conventions and what I want to show. Shot types Throughout my music video, I plan to use various shot types. I will be using longshots and medium close ups of the filming around London and the live footage, then I will use medium close ups of the band members individually to show emotion and expression on their faces. Research What music videos have you watched to research your genre? One of the videos I looked at to research my genre was Arctic Monkeys Whyd You Only Call Me When Youre High. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6366dxFf-Os This is because it had some good filming outside in a city which is what I wanted so I took some ideas from that and incorporated them into mine. Another music video I looked at was Mallory Knox Oceans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gk4EfcKHT9k This video contains footage of the band members playing their instruments, the shots they used for this influenced the shot types I used and was able to get an idea by watching the music video to see how all the shots had been put together. How have these videos influenced the decisions made? Include screen shots of the key influences These videos have influenced the decisions I made as they use very good shots and different angles which I want to try and show in my music video. They show the conventions of alternative rock by showing each band member and shots of the band all together which is what I want to show in my video so I have got some good ideas by watching these. Meaning of the song Does the song have a meaning? If so, what is it? The song is about a girl and the lyrics kind of explain a story which is that she called up one day to find out if she was his true love and the song goes on to say that he told the truth and she didnt like it so asks himself why she has to be like that. How will your visuals relate to the song? (Illustrate, Amplify or Disjuncture) My visuals wont particularly relate to the song as my music video will show a journey to a gig. Therefore I will start it by sowing the tube stations and people in the town of London, then show live footage when theyre at the gig and continue showing the journey throughout the song. Storyboard Mood board Create a mood board showing what look your music video will have.
