The Best Resource in the

Library is the Librarian

My name is Julie
Aldrich and this is my
first year as the school
library media specialist,
or librarian, if you prefer.
Although my job title is
Library Media Specialist,
I am first and foremost a
teacher.
Since starting in CCSD in
1999, Ive taught 3-4 grades and have
had a vast array of experiences. Re-
gardless of what grade you teach, I am
here to help you with research, plan-
ning a project, to collaborate, and am
willing to pre-teach or re-teach any ELA
standards that you would like me to.
Helping others gives me a huge sense
of satisfaction, so please do not hesi-
tate to ask me for help with anything.
Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year. Please keep
this newsletter and attached documents together
and in a safe place. I have prepared it for you so
that you will have many resources at your fingertips
and dont need to go on a hunt when you are ready
to use this information! I recognize that experiences
vary and you may not yet know some of
the tricks of working with me or using
our library resources effectively. There is
also a pretty good chance that the school
library that you remember from your
school days ( or even some you have vis-
ited more recently) was different from
our program here. To help get things off
on a positive spin, I have included a num-
ber of things about the Jeffers Elementary
School Library, our program, and me,
that can help us both form a great part-
nership for our students.

All teachers and staff members can recommend materials, give sug-
gestions for books or lessons, and have a voice in our library policy
making. To get started, you can participate in our library sponsored
events. Be on the look out for information regarding upcoming
events including Family Library Nights, the Scholastic Book Fair, Kids
to Kids-Snack Time With Books, and Accelerated Reader Meetings.
We are fortunate to have an amazing selection of professional books
for teachers as well as books for students and staff members to
check out. You can search our collection by perusing our shelves or
by using the online catalog. To access the online catalog, open any
web browser and visit our schools homepage.

Teachers are free to check out as many books as they would like to.
Once you make your selections, please give them to either Ms. Ma-
drid or myself to check them out to you. All items with barcodes
should be scanned out for inventory purposes.
We are very fortunate to have a wonderful library
aide. Priscilla Madrid is our full time aide. She not
only checks in and out all the books for the students,
but she can also help you to find what you are looking
for. If you havent met her yet, pop in today to say hi!

We Need YOU!
Please send new students to the library for their library time with their name written on a 3x5 index
card. This will help us get students ready to check out books and oriented to the library right away.

We will be providing you with lanyards and library cards to use as library passes for open library.
Please feel free to send students to the library any time during the school day. They are always
welcome to come to check out and return books.

On library day, please walk your students to the library and let us know that you are here and sepa-
rate your students into a girl and boy line. They walk in and stop at the end of the bookshelves.
Today a
reader,
tomorrow a
leader.

Students will receive a score for their perfor-
mance in the library when you pick them up each
day. A 4 is the top score a class can receive and a
0 is the worst. Every class will begin the library
period with a score of a 4. Points will be deduct-
ed as needed for misbehavior. Specifically, I will
be looking at entering and leaving the library
properly, appropriate noise levels during the
lesson and checkout, participation, and respect.
Thank you in advance for encouraging your stu-
dents to do their best.
Students are expected to
behave in the library. We
have specific rules listed on
our board, however, we will
focus on the 4 Rs during
library instruction:

Respect
Responsibility
Reading
Research
Scores For Specials
Behavior Expectations
Circulation Policy
date. Please remind your
students to return their
books on library days and
to keep their books in a
safe place while they are
borrowing them from our
library.
The Jeffers Library Media
Center has developed a
circulation policy in order
to ensure fair access to
information for all stu-
dents. Students in grades
2-5 will begin checking
out books on their 2nd
visit to the library. First
grade students will begin
checking out at a later
