UEMX 3333: STRUCTURAL STEEL DESIGN

ASSIGNMENT: STRUCTURAL DESCRIPTION (Individual report)


Handout date: Monday 9 June 2014; Due date: before 5pm Friday 4 July 2014
1. Assignment tasks:
Each student is required to select and describe a steel structure/building that could
be either existing building or in the erecting/designing process. The detailed description
is about structural aspects, namely, structural members and joints with figures included.
The work could be carried out through either site visit (recommended) or searching on
the Internet.
2. Assignment aim:
The aim of this assignment is to help students apply the fundamental knowledge of
science, engineering and mathematics to understand a realistic problem.
3. Your report should have the following sections:
a. Introduction:
Give a short briefing about your selected building, i.e. when/where it was built,
how many storey, etc
b. Description of structural components:
Show the figures of typical members, joints, roof structure, etc
Use your knowledge learnt from Structural Analysis, Solid Mechanics, etc to
comment/explain how structures, joints work. For example: member is in bending,
torsion, or combined loadings, etc What is the solution to increase the safety
and structural performance? Explain the layout of joints, etc
c. Discussion and conclusion:
Give the short summary about the interesting aspect of structure that you have
gained
4. Note:
Your description is required to carry out in hand writing.
The more detailed description with figures included, the better mark is given
