Eveline decides not to leave her family.

2 Eveline is at the station at the North Wall.


She is surrounded by the crowd among which she recognizes a group of soldiers.
She felt her cheek pale and cold and she prayed god to show her what was her duty.
She suddenly became passive and gave him no sign of love or farewell or recognition.
Eveline understands that she has to remain with her family and place because by leaving them she would
have drowned , she wouldnt have been happy.
The last words of the story suggest sad feelings and emotions towards Frank and at the same time the
disillusion of Eveline.

C The narrator expresses Eveline thoughts both by making questions to the reader (for example Could she
still draw back after all he had done for her? l.154) both by using images that concern the internal world
of the girl.

1 Joyce introduces her in an untraditional and indirect way since the story takes place in Evelines mind. The
reader has to know her story.
2 At the beginning she looks very afraid of making a choice and at the end she shows her indifference
because she is immobilized by her internal conflict.
