The Atlanta Police Department participated in a joint agency terrorism drill that
simulated an attack at Lenox Square. The drill was aimed at improving emergency
response between federal and local officials during terrorist threats.

Atlanta Police Catch A Thief In The Act
May 4, 2014

Atlanta Police quickly arrested an armed robbery suspect after he attempted to rob a
donut shop. When the officer arrived on the scene, the suspect tried to flee but was
quickly apprehended. The officer arrested the suspect without further incident and
recovered the gun that was used in the attempted robbery.

Atlanta Police Honors Fallen Officers
May 6, 2014

The Atlanta Police Department remembered 82 police officers that died in the line of
duty during the 23rd Annual Atlanta Police Memorial Service. Fortunately, no officers
died in the line of duty in 2013. However, Investigator Richard Williams was added to
the official roll call this year. Investigator Williams was shot in the back by a student in
1987. He was left paralyzed but stayed on the job as a school resource officer. He
served the Department for 37 years and passed away in October 2011.

The Atlanta Police Departments use of technology was recently highlighted in Googles
Official Enterprise blog. The Departments use of technology has helped to reduce crime to
its lowest level in history. Technology such as the Video Integration Center (VIC) gives the
Department instant access to 2,500+cameras throughout the city and the ability to monitor
crime in real time. The Department recently developed a search tool using Google Search
Appliance to make the VIC even more powerful.

The Atlanta Police Department hosted an international delegation from the Israel
National Police Department. The visit was part of a new leadership and exchange
program with the Atlanta Police Leadership Institute (APLI). The APLI exchange
program encourages training on international law enforcement issues such as
preventing acts of terror, responding to suspicious objects and organizing volunteers for
emergency response.

Atlanta Police Department Deputy Chief Shawn J ones appeared on radio station V-103
discussing concerns of sex trafficking. Chief J ones shared how the Department
partners with various agencies and participates in the M.A.T.C.H Taskforce to prevent
child exploitation and child prostitution. Last year, the Atlanta Police Department made
more than 600 arrests where minor sex trafficking was involved.

Atlanta Police Arrest Leads to Conviction
May 15, 2014

A man arrested by the Atlanta Police Department for kidnapping and sexually
assaulting a 26-year-old woman will spend the remainder of his life in prison. Willie
Devontae Tims was convicted on charges of rape, aggravated sodomy, kidnapping,
hijacking a motor vehicle and weapons offenses. He was sentenced to two
consecutive life terms, plus 70 years. Due to the hard work by Atlanta
Investigators, another criminal is off the streets of Atlanta.

Predictive Policing in Action in Atlanta, Georgia

The Police Chief magazine highlighted the Atlanta Police Departments use of
Predpol. The Department started using the predicting policing program in J uly 2013
in two zones. During the 90-day trial, the Department targeted burglary, car theft, and
robbery and noticed these crimes declined when compared to the prior 90-day
period. Predictive policing has been successful at reducing crime and implemented
in all the zones.
Atlanta Police Make Huge Counterfeit Bust

The Atlanta Police Department conducted a two-day operation and seized more than
$1,000,000 in counterfeit goods. The Department targeted seven businesses and
arrested three suspects. Counterfeit businesses are often involved with other illegal
activities and profits typically support criminal activity such as drug trafficking and
money laundering.

Atlanta Police Fight Crime with Social Media
May 30, 2014

The Atlanta Police Departments use of social media has helped to reduce crime in the East Atlanta
area. The Department is using social media and the online social network Next Door to alert
residents about crime. In Zone 6, several types of crimes have decreased including robbery,
burglary, murder, larceny and auto theft.
