TRIANGLE CENTERS

CONSTRUCIONS
Day 3
OBJECTIVE
Students will be able to describe the necessary steps, using academic language,
to complete a geometric construction. Students will also be able to complete
constructions including bisecting line segments and angles, and creating perpendicular
lines.
STANDARDS
Common Core Geometry: Congruence
Make geometric constructions.
12. Make formal geometric constructions with a variety of tools and methods (compass and
straightedge, string, reflective devices, paper folding, dynamic geometric software, etc.).
Copying a segment; copying an angle; bisecting a segment; bisecting an angle; constructing
perpendicular lines, including the perpendicular bisector of a line segment; and constructing a
line parallel to a given line through a point not on the line.

ISTE Technology Standards:
1. Creativity and Innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products
and processes using technology.
a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes
b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression
2. Communication and Collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including
at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.
a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital
environments and media
b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media
and formats
PREPARATION
The teacher should prepare in advance a short video of a multistep construction
such as drawing a perpendicular line or bisecting an angle. The video should be
uploaded to the class website. The teacher should also know the process of creating a
video using screen capture apps or Quicktime.
GUIDED INSTRUCTION STUDENT WORK
Instruct students on how to draw angles,
bisect a line segment, create a
perpendicular bisector and draw a
perpendicular line through a given point.
Since students previously practiced using
the compass and a straightedge it
Students should practice creating
constructions along with the teacher.

should be easier to complete
constructions
Encourage students to use sound effects
and hand gestures to help them
remember the correct sequences.
Handout worksheet found below to
guide students through new
constructions. All constructions should
be completed by the end of class, or for
homework.
Tell students to scan or take a picture of
completed worksheet and pin to their
board.
Direct students to constructions video
that was previously made. Explain that
they will narrate the video and provide
them with options for recording a
narration of the video.
Show students how to create a screen
capture video with narration.
Provide students with options if students
are unable to locate screen capture
software or have access to a microphone.

Students should use sound effects and
hand gestures to aid in memorization.

Students will complete worksheet and
pin to their Pinterest account.

Students may use QuickTime to view the
narration of the video and add an audio
recording, or use another screen capture
software or app.

Students that do not have access to a
microphone have the option of writing
captions for the video and posting them
as comments to the video. Comments
should be as detailed as possible.
STUDENT PRODUCTS
In class students will practice drawing perpendicular bisectors, angle bisectors and
congruent angles using the worksheet found below.
Students will use screen capture software or app to add their own voice narration to
the teacher provided video. Students may write captions to the video and leave
them as comments to the video. All students should Pin the video to their Pinterest
accounts.
