Love is Blind
Love is a much talked about an interesting topic. Many different books are stemmed
around the topic. People in all different cultures can relate with the topic of love. A very
common theme in many books is that love is blind. The theme love is blind relates to many
different pieces of literature.
To begin, the theme love is blind can mean numerous different things. If you were to take
it literally it means that love cant see, but this is not the case. In my mind, love is blind means
that love is not something thats obtained through looks. True love is not obtained through
appearance alone, its through your interactions with the person and how you feel towards them.
However, many people have different perspectives on the topic.
A Midsummer Nights Dream is a play by William Shakespeare that incorporates the
theme very well. The play follows the love lives of multiple different people. A potion is given
to some people that makes them love people who they normally wouldnt. For example, the
character Titiania falls in love with a man named Nick Bottom who has a donkeys head. In one
scene she tells him of how enamored she is of him and states, On the first view to say, to swear,
I love thee.(Shakespeare 36). This proves that love is blind as she sees past his flaws.
Another famous novel that has the theme is The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The
Great Gatsby is about the struggles of a millionaire named Jay Gatsby as he tries to regain the
love of a woman named Daisy Buchanan. Gatsby has not seen Daisy in years but still goes above
and beyond in order to gain her love again. He becomes blinded with his love towards Daisy and
sacrifices many things for her, eventually even his life. As you can see, this book contains many
themes about love including the theme that love is blind.
From analyzing two famous literary works it is easy to see that the theme love is blind
reoccurs a lot in literature and can be interpreted in many different ways. Through the use of A
Midsummer Nights Dream and The Great Gatsby we were able to analyze the theme love is
blind, and how it relates to different pieces of literature. The theme is shown many times in both
works. The theme love is blind is very interesting and can be related to by many people around
the world. Without the theme many famous literary works would not be what they have become
today.
