This is Sandy Gallagher CEO of the Proctor Gallagher Institute. Ive got a
great lesson for you today.
One of the most difficult tasks you or I will face in life is overcoming these
internal conflicts. You know, they rage within us. Its like do it, dont do it, do
it, dont do it! You know what I mean? Every conflict its a set of opposing
ideas. All of us have had that feeling knowing what we should do on the one
hand and doing what we feel like doing on the other hand. By understanding
these two opposing forces warring within us, we come to a knowledge of the
truth. Were no longer slaves to this. A clear understanding makes us masters
over ourself.
In Bhagavad Gita, it was written, A mans own self is his friend. A mans owns
self is his foe. Think of that.
David Seabury explained that, Modern science knows much about such
conflicts. We call the mental state that engenders it ambivalence; a collision
between thought and feeling.
James Allan had something to say on this, he said, If you want to be strong
and happy you must cease to be a passive receptacle for the negative
beggarly and impure streams of thought. I love that! A passive receptacle
isnt that fitting?
Most of us have activities, diversions of one sort or another that we perform
habitually. We slip into them almost unconsciously. And it becomes a
problem when the activity interferes with us doing things that we know inside,
where it counts, to be more important for reaching our goals and dreams. If
you find yourself falling into such activities perhaps continuing to perform
them, even while youre thinking I should be doing this, or I should be doing
that. Heres a trick that might work for you. Design a ritual you can fall back
on regardless of the activity, okay? So for example the instant you become
conscious of what youre doing and aware that you should be doing something
else, pinch yourself. Right here between the thumb and first finger of your left
hand. Pinch yourself hard and immediately get up and walk to one particular
rally spot that youve chosen for these interventions. Take a few deep breaths,
visualize yourself engaging in the activity you intend to do instead of what
you were doing and then go and do it. Try it.
This is Sandy Gallagher helping you get Results that Stick.
