6.5.2:Examine selected examples of Human Rights issues around the world
II. Learning Objective(s) / Goal (s) written in student friendly language (i.e. I can statements):
I can understand and describe the two selected issues (the war in Afghanistan, the Mystery of flight MH370) and how it relates to Human Rights.
III. Lesson Rationale:
This lesson will concentrate on introducing the topic of the war in Afghanistan and Canadas role in the war. The students will look at a picture and create a KWL chart, watch a small documentary clip and Label / color a map. This will place our reading for the following day in a little more context.

VI. Learning Cycle: (Engaging Questions, Exploration, Explanation, Expansion, Evaluation):
KWL o As students enter the classroom, there will be a picture that represents the war in Afghanistan. They will receive a KWL handout chart and they will have 5 minutes to examine the picture and write down what they know. We will than fill out that section of the KWL. Once completed, we will fill out the W section on what they would like to learn. I am asking that each students have at least 5 different things listed in each section. Map o Students will be given a map and I will place a large map on the Smartboard. They will be asked to label each country and capital on the map, as well as color each country a different color.

Once completed they will be asked to create a legend indicating what country is what color. As most maps have a legend, this will make students aware that maps often have legends as well as create a visual memory as each country will be paired with a color. Film o Finally, I will show a film and ask students to write two new pieces of knowledge that they attained from the film. They will be asked to do so on the backside of their KWL chart.
VII. Accommodation(s) for Diverse Learner(s): Groupings o Students are grouped so that there are stronger and weaker students at the same table. The stronger students are able to provide extra support for the weaker students. EAL o There are a few EAL students and they are seated strategically in the classroom so that there is a helpful strong students sitting next to them. They will also be given more time during their EAL block to finish the work provided. Students are given Handouts for each of the activities which provides structure for the students. Instructions will also be written up on the board to ensure that everyone understands what I am asking of them.
VIII. Evaluation/Assessment of Student Progress: At the end of this two week mini-unit, students will be asked to provide me all of the worksheets that we have done in class. I will than correct the pack of sheets for each student, ensuring that they have completed all the work. They will asked be asked to write a small piece of writing at the end.
