Teacher Candidate: Grace Creech Lesson # 1
Subject/Grade: Primary Montessori Date and Time of Lesson: 2/11/14 @ 8 a.m.

Learning Objective: Students will be able to correctly categorize, count, and graph hearts by color.

Alignment with Standards:
K.CC.A.3 Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0
representing a count of no objects)

K.CC.B.5 Count to answer how many? questions about as many as 20 things arranged in a line, a
rectangular array, or a circle, or as many as 10 things in a scattered configurations; given a number from 1-
20, count out that many objects.

K.MD.B.3 Classify objects into given categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the
categories by count. Limit category counts to be less than or equal to 10.

Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections:
Students have previously worked with numbers 1-20 and one to one correspondence lessons.

Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
Pre Assessment Students have successfully completed lessons involving one to one correspondence, matching, and
counting.

During As the students complete the work, teacher observation will assess if they are correctly completing the work.
The handout that students complete will give feedback on the accuracy of how well they did.

Post After completing this lesson, handouts will be kept. Students will be asked at a later time to fill in hearts using
appropriate colored pencils to show their results. (This time it will be done without the candy hearts)

Accommodations: Students will be dismissed to work as they complete their handout. This lesson will be modified for
younger students. This will be done by explaining to the children that if they cannot write the numbers, they can draw a
dot for each heart of that color and I will help them write the number when they finish.

Materials:
Candy Hearts
Handout
Pencils
Smart Board

Procedures:
1. I will begin by showing the students the handout we will be completing.
2. I will then explain to students that each of them will be given some candy hearts and that they are to
place one of them over each heart. Students will be instructed to not eat the candy hearts.
3. Students will be told that they are to count their hearts by color and fill in the information at the
bottom of the paper. An example will be shown.
4. I will then ask students to turn around on the line so that they can write on the floor instead of the
carpet.
5. Each student will be given a handout and some candy hearts.
6. I will walk around and monitor as this is completed.

7. I will give help to any student who needs extra help. (Mainly 3s and 4s)
8. As each students work has been checked, they will be dismissed to work.

Activity Analysis:
Students will do this activity as a whole group. Every student will have various results depending on the colors
of their candy hearts; however, each student is completing the same activity. The technology in this lesson will
be the Smart Board.
