Romeo and Juliets Portrait

The drawing is definitely an interesting embodiment of the forbidden romance between
Romeo and Juliet. The sketch looks as if the two individuals are in separate corridors, but have
found each other at the corner where the halls end. The shape is cut in half, which may
symbolize that the individuals complete each other. However, the pieces in which Romeo and
Juliet attempt to break from resemble a mirror. This may cause the viewer to believe that what
Romeo or Juliet sees is their reflection. As Juliet looks through the mirror, she only sees Romeo
because her love for him consumes her. She has eyes for no one else, not even her. Additionally,
the shape is bent and folded, as well as, stuck in between a wall. The curves may represent the
twists and turns, including obstacles, which the couple has to face together, hence the touching
hands. The surrounding frame symbolizes the world in which they live in. Many ridicule their
love, and start to close their doors to them. The frames that encase them, and keep them captive,
are intertwined so that Romeo and Juliet cannot escape. However, one can notice that the
couples eyes gaze downward because they may be trying to find a way to escape the pressures
of society. Nonetheless, the frame seems to be a book, or a door, which is in the process of
closing. The perceived message is that when it gets dark, and looks as if everything is against
you, there is still a glimmer of hope that will guide you to the solution. This may be the image of
the lost couple trying to keep the doors open and thereby, keep hope alive.
