Intro to Art Course Outline

This course is designed to give students experience in all areas of visual art offered at Dobyns
Bennett. Students will apply various media, techniques, and processes in the areas of art
production and will develop skills to analye works of art. ! variety of media includes drawing,
painting, weaving, sculpting, printmaking, and ceramics. "ach pro#ect will increase student
understanding of the elements of art and principles of design.

9 weeks: Elements of Art
Week 1$ %ntro to "lements of !rt&' (abits
)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will create a foldable graphic organier of illustrations of the
elements of art as a reference tool to use throughout the semester. Students will also be doing
sketchbook work with the ' (abits of (ighly "ffective Teens. The ' (abits will be discussed
and incorporated into lessons daily throughout the semester.
*esearch component$ Students will collaborate in small groups to research individual art
elements and present their findings to the class
*eflection$ Students will reflect upon their learning through a written sketchbook assignment.
Week 2$ +olor
)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will mix tempera paint to create a color wheel, including shades,
hues, and tints. This will also be used as a reference tool.
*esearch component$ Small groups will research and share results on the following topics$
color schemes, color theory, artist ,osef !lbers, color in advertising.
*eflection$ Students will design an interior color scheme of their choice in a sketchbook
assignment.
Week 3$ -alue and Texture
)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will create a value scale, texture map, and still life drawing.
*esearch component$ Small groups will be given prints of still life artworks. .roups will
analye the artworks and present their findings.
*eflection&practice$ Students will practice using value and texture by creating sketches of
everyday ob#ects from their lives.

Weeks ' and ($ :orm and Space
)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will create a figurative sculpture.
*esearch component$ Students will study the human figure by completing a series of live
gesture drawings, analying their drawings, and selecting a pose on which to base their
sculpture. Students will also study figurative sculpture throughout history.
*eflection$ Students will analye their work and the works of others by participating in a
critique. They will then write about this experience in their sketchbooks.

)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will create and assemble an <p !rt cube.
*esearch component$ Small groups will research the designs, purpose, and artists behind the
<p !rt movement and share their results.
*eflection$ Students will reflect upon the success of their <p !rt cube by completing a
reflective statement in their sketchbooks.

)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will create a work of art based on a favorite artist.
*esearch component$ Students will research the works and biography of an artist of their
choice 3from a given list of artists6.
*eflection$ Students will analye their work and the works of others by participating in a
critique. They will then write about this experience in their sketchbooks.
Week 9$ !rtist )resentation
)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will create a presentation of their choice 3)rei, (aiku Deck,
)ower)oint6 about the artist whose work they recreated and share it with the class.
*esearch$ Students will use the research accumulated during their artist study to create this
presentation.
*eflection$ Students will reflect upon their first nine weeks experience in intro to art in their
sketchbooks.

)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will carve a series of stamps= they will ink the stamps and print a
series of prints.
*esearch component$ Small groups will research the history and methods of printmaking and
present findings to the class. Students will individually research balanced designs.
*eflection$ Students will self/assess their final prints.
Week 3$ )attern
)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will create a fiber weaving using a variety of fibers they collect.
Students will achieve a pattern in their weavings.
*esearch component$ Small groups will research >ative !merican weaving techniques and
designs and share their findings with the class.
*eflection$ Students will write a reflective statement about their weaving experience in their
sketchbooks.

)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will learn a ceramics handbuilding technique by creating a coil
container.
*esearch component$ Students will analye select art prints of coil containers, record and
report their findings to the class.
*eflection$ Students will self/assess their coil container and write a reflective statement in their
sketchbooks.

)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will create a personal timeline using symbols they develop.
@hen all timelines are complete, students will weave them together to create a large group
weaving.
*esearch component$ Students will individually create a list of significant events or memories
of experiences in their lives.
*eflection$ Students will reflect upon what they learned about themselves through this pro#ect
in their sketchbooks.
Week )$ *$ Aovement
)ro#ect ob#ectives$ Students will create an expressive self/portrait including an element of
movement using oil pastels.
*esearch component$ Small groups will analye self/portraits by -incent -an .ogh, :rida
Bahlo, and )ablo )icasso and present their findings to the class.
*eflection$ Students will analye their work and the works of others by participating in a
critique. They will then write about this experience in their sketchbooks.

artwork. Students will also create an art business card featuring a D* code linking to their art
website.
*esearch$ Students will individually research artist websites, business cards, and careers in
the visual arts.
