Things to Know
On September 11, 2001, 19 militants associated with the
Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and
carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United
States. Two of the planes were flown into the Twin Towers
(the World Trade Center) a third plane hit the Pentagon just
outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in
a field in Pennsylvania.

Causes
There are many different theories of what
caused the attacks, but the main, most plausible
causes are:
1. Retaliation for Americas support of Israel
2. American involvement in the Persian Gulf
War
3. Continued American military presence in the
middle east
4. Hatred and religious fanaticism
Figures
Many people were involved in the 9/11 attacks, like the al-
Qaeda terrorist group and all the victims and people
around the places during the attacks. The main figures
however are:
- Osama Bin Laden, the founder of al-Qaeda and mastermind
behind the attacks
- George W. Bush, the president of the United States at the
time of the attacks
- Mohamed Atta, the hijacker-pilot of American Airlines Flight
11, crashing the plane into the North Tower of the World
Trade Center
- Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the mayor of New York at the time of
the attacks




Details
The 19 terrorist went to 3 East Coast airports and boarded
4 flights bound to California.
The 1
st
plane crashed into the west side of the pentagon.
The next two crashed into the South and North World
Trade Centers in New York. Meanwhile, the fourth plane
(aiming for the White House) crashed in a rural field in
Pennsylvania due to passengers attacking the hijackers.
September 11tth 2011 was the deadliest day in history for
New York firefighters.
Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks in New
York City and Washington, D.C., including more than 400
police officers and firefighters.

Effects
The terrorist attacks of 9/11 changed the United States
forever. After the attacks, President W. Bush declared a War
on Terror, which is any measures taken by the United States
and some allies to destroy international terrorist groups.
Steps taken to avoid another attack that still affect the way we
live today are:
1. War in Afghanistan and Iraq
2. Transportation Security Administration was created to
secure the nations airports and screens all commercial
airline passengers and baggage.
3. A closer eye is now put on immigrants with the number of
deportations doubling in the decade after the attacks.
4. Patriot Act now enacted to allow law enforcement
agencies increased powers to bring terrorists to justice
