Name: Siobhan Goldman-Anthony Date: Wednesday, April 16, 2014
Length of Large Group Time: 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Size of group: 14 Age of children: 3-5 years old
Activities/Purpose:
Activity #1
o First I will take a nature walk with the children and they will collect nature items such as fallen leaves, dandelions, and twigs. When we arrive back in the classroom, they will place these items in the science area with magnifying glasses and paper and markers for the children to draw their observations on.
o I chose this activity because for the children because they will be able to make more friendships with their peers, and they will be able to talk about what they see outside and what it means to them learning about Earth Day.
Activity #2
o Next, I will have the children mix colors to make green. Using the paints yellow and blue on a green construction paper make green. Thats what I will have the children do is mix the two colors on a green construction paper. Then once they have the colors mixed, they will just paint an earth that has been printed from the computer.
o I chose this activity because the children will be able to learn problem solving and cause and effect through this activity. They will learn how to mix colors and whats the results of mixing two Siobhan Goldman-Anthony colors. It will also give them the idea of mixing any other two colors to make another color other than green.
Activity #3 o Next, I will do an activity called Spin the Globe where the globe is placed in the middle of the table and the children surround the table and I ask them questions like, Where do you live?, Where is your family from? or Do you know what state we are in?
o I chose this activity because the children will learn about the world and different states and its capitals, they will also learn more about themselves. I also think that the awareness of diversity in self and their peers will also be a factor in this activity.
Transition Activity
o Finally, I will end my circle time and transition the children by giving them a 2 minute warning, then a 1 minute warning. When it's time to switch activities, we will do a countdown together from 10 to 1. When the children hear me begin with a loud "10", they'll quickly learn that soon they will need to move. I will have the children count with me.
o I chose this transition activity because the students will learn to count backwards much earlier than they would otherwise. Also I feel if they know how to count forwards, it will be even more fun counting backwards.
