A Capstone By Emily Blair & Jacob Nelson Currently in 2013, only 25% of Haiti has energy supplies, and since the earthquake of 2010, there remains the need to reduce the gap not only for basic service, but for emergency situations as well. Due to unpredictable power shortages, many communities in Haiti go numerous days at a time with no power. P.O.W.E.R. seeks to respond to the need of two local Haitian communities by providing an alternative power source when electricity is unavailable. P.O.W.E.R.

P.O.W.E.R.s objectives The design of the solar panels will be based off of a similar project, we care solar. P.O.W.E.R. will design, build, and provide solar panels to an orphanage and a parish in Haiti in order to meet their immediate energy needs. The P.O.W.E.R. team will consist of students from The Center for Leadership and International Relations at James River High School (LSIR) and students from the Governors Academy for Engineering Studies at L.C. Bird High School (LCB). Throughout this process, the P.O.W.E.R. team will facilitate cultural education events to inform the Midlothian area about the situation in Haiti and bring awareness to the project.
The LSIR team will be responsible for event planning, promoting cultural awareness, fundraising, and communications. The LSIR ream leaders will recruit fellow students to assist in all of these aspects of the project as needed. The LCB team will be responsible for designing the panels, acquiring the supplies, building the panels, testing the panels, providing a prototype, and packaging the solar panels. The entire P.O.W.E.R. team is dedicated to enhancing the knowledge of all participants in this project; therefore assessments will be given at the beginning and end of the project to all participation LSIR students, LCB students, and community members to determine how much they learned. LSIR students and LCB students will be evaluated on their leadership and engineering skills, respectively, and all students and community members will take cultural awareness evaluations.
