THE GREEK TEMPLE
‘The temples were among the most beautiful build-
constructed by'the ancient Greeks. They were sim-
ple, /graceful structures that were made of the finest
stone’and’ marble. They served as places for the ancient
Greeks to gather and to:worship. Each temple was built
in’honor of a Greek god or goddess. The Greeks usually
‘built their’ temples on an acropolis. An acropolis was a
HRigh “part of the city. The acropolis served as a high
fortress’ or religious center.
Name
‘A typical temple was a one-story, rectangular build-
ingiwith two rooms. A large central room called the cella
uustially contained a statue of a Greek god or goddess. A
smaller room was sometimes used as.a special sreasuryito
hold gold and other valuables.
Beautiful stone carvings and paintings decorated!the
temple. Stone sculpture filled the pediment, the trian-
gularshaped area at the top of each end of the temple.
‘The outside of the temple was surrounded by tall pillars
or columns which helped to support the roof.
‘A fine example of a Greek temple is the Parthenon.
‘The citizens of ancient Athens built this temple on'the
Acropolis of Athens to honor the goddess Athena.
