RISHWIN SINGH SINDA PHYSICS FORM 4 CHAPTER 2
DISTANCE and DISPLACEMENT

DISTANCE DISPLACEMENT
- The total length travelled by an
object from one position to
another.
- A Scalar Quantity.
- SI unit: metre, (m)
- The shortest distance from a
reference point.
- A vector quantity
- SI unit: metre, (m)

SPEED and VELOCITY

SPEED VELOCITY
- The distance travelled per unit
time or rate of change of
distance.

- A Scalar Quantity.
- SI unit: ms
-1

- The displacement per unit time
or rate of change of
displacement.

- A Vector Quantity.
- SI unit: ms
-1

RISHWIN SINGH SINDA PHYSICS FORM 4 CHAPTER 2
A Scalar Quantity is a Physical Quantity which
Has only Magnitude or value.
Ex: Time, Mass, Distance, Speed, Energy

A Vector Quantity is a Physical Quantity which
Has both Magnitude/value and Direction.
Ex: Displacement, Velocity, Acceleration

ACCELARATION

- Accelaration , (a) is the rate of change of Velocity.

() ()

- It is a Vector Quantity.
- SI unit: ms
-2

-
- Velocity Accelaration +

- Velocity uniform, Accelaration is uniform

- Velocity decrease Accelaration (deceleration)

- Velocity is uniform, Accelaration is Zero
