College Planning Day is a day for students to hear presentations from various colleges,
which is mainly for juniors.
All of the powerpoints will be on the Washington Council website at the end of their tour

Northwest University (Kirkland, WA)
This is a Christian university
About 1,500 students and regionally accredited
Students are required to attend chapel 3 times a week and take bible/theology courses
They have 60+ academic programs (such as pre-med, education, psychology, business)
Study Abroad is required for certain majors
Many ways to be involved: drama, journalism, debate, etc.
Several different forms of campus ministries (pursuit, life groups, choralons, crossing)
There is on-campus living: residence halls and campus apartments
Athletics: National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes (NAIA)

One of the most diverse student populations

Common Application
Program Highlights: Direct entry nursing program, criminal justice, sport and exercise
science program, and law
There is a Sullivan Leadership Award that covers everything associated with college.
There are 9 awards and you have to apply by the first deadline.
Your application does need the writing supplement!
Largest transfer student rate for private colleges in WA. You jump into upper division
classes.

Open Door simply means colleges offer a variety of class levels and student services to
accommodate differing readiness levels
While students may be admitted at any time, certain classes might be full.
The GED test is changing and prices are going up! The test now aligns with Common
Core curriculum.
They recommend taking more math in high school, so they dont have to take pre-college
math at the college and pay $600 for it.
Training and skills to prepare for work
o Associate of applied science: six to eight quarters (two years)
o Certificate of completion: three to five quarters (nine months or a year)

o CTCs issues the high school diploma
o Students will demonstrate competency in reading, writing, and math in the
context of science, history, government, occupational studies, and digital literacy.

High transfer rate, they can transfer buddy with UW Bothell, convenient.
Several new degrees coming out this year

The stigma associated with community colleges has gone down, more and more students
are starting at a community college.
They are reducing the remedial math classes
Running Start is changing
o There is no placement cut off now
o All the hard deadlines are now priority deadlines
o Students who need to do running start, send them there way no matter the date
o Entry advising is now mandatory starting Winter 2014
o There is some housing on campus, generally for athletes who live further away
and international students
o Trojans Day: high school seniors, money available for transportation, application,
testing, orientation, and education planning.
o Students still need to do financial aid application early!

Emphasis on specific job skills

They guarantee their program, if students need more education they can go back to the
school for free for up to 15 credits
You can apply any time (online, in person, by mail)

ESHB 1336 increasing the capacity of school districts to recognize and respond to

o Required training on suicide screening and referral as condition for certification
o Frequency of training is every 5 years
o OSPI will develop a model of a school plan by 2014

Offers are made on a rolling basis
Faxed transcripts are now accepted as a official transcript
No personal statement needed now for admission
They base admission on HS grades, ACT/SAT scores, grade trends, and the courses taken
o So what about students whose scores dont reflect what type of student they are?
WSU admissions can request an additional semester of work from students, ask
them to respond to questions about how they plan to be successful at college, and
recommendations if admissions is really one the fence.
