Blarney Stone (Kissing Stone)
One of the most popular spots for
tourists to travel to is called the Blarney
Stone. The stone is a block of limestone
that is build into the Blarney Castle.
Legend has it that when someone kisses
the stone they will receive the gift of gab,
which is great eloquence. The stone was
set into the castle in 1446. No one really
knows where the stone comes from. There
are stories that the stone originated in
Ireland and then was moved to Scotland
and then moved back to Ireland in 1314.
The tradition of kissing the stone dates
back to the 18
th
century.
The ritual of kissing the stone goes like
this; the kisser must first go to the castles
peak and lean backwards over the edge.
Most people need the help of another
person but it is easier now with the
safeguards installed. Before the safeguards
were installed it was very dangerous; so
dangerous in fact there was an episode of
Sherlock Holmes when he must
investigate the death of a man who
attempted to kiss the Blarney Stone. Many
people including movie stars, world
salesman and famous authors have
completed the ritual of kissing the stone.
