Reflection

In October, all counselors went into senior classrooms to give the Senior Planning lesson.
This lesson is given every year and has pertinent information on graduation requirements, dates
for testing, and information on post-high school options. Typically, the counselors give the
lesson and that is the end. After talking with my supervisor, she let me attach a pre and post
survey to the lesson and report back the data to counselors and administrators. This was the first
time a survey was given in conjunction with the lesson. To do the surveys quickly, I created a
three question survey on surveymonkey and put the url on Cascades website. Students are
familiar with the website and the counselors were easily able to instruct students to go there,
click on the link, and take the survey. The pre and post survey probably took less than five
minutes of the lesson time and provided actual data for the counselors to see and report to
administration. The powerpoint I used to deliver the lesson, the surveymonkey results, and a
data table is attached.
The questions included:
1. Do you know how to find scholarships on Cascades website? Yes or No
2. Do you know the application deadline for the school(s) you are applying to? Yes or No
3. Do you know how to apply for financial aid (FAFSA)? Yes or No

In short, for all three questions, before the lesson we had more students not knowing
(versus knowing) the answers to these questions and after the lesson we had more students
knowing (versus not knowing) the answers to these questions. The greatest area of learning was
on the first questions, knowing how to find scholarships on Cascades website. I think this was
the greatest area of growth because when on Cascades website to take the survey we had each
student go to the scholarships tab and point out which scholarships they could apply for. We
should have had 100% of students answering yes, but we had 91.25%. Although I only delivered
one lesson to the class by myself, each counselor administered the surveys, so the data from the
surveys reflects all of the senior lessons, not just mine. All in all, this was a great first lesson to
teach and it was pretty cool to have some data to show the counselors and administrators. All
too often the administration doesnt know what we are doing or can see the effect we are having
on students learning and in this instance they did.
