Pre-Planning
Standard:
Reading Anchor Standard 3.9: Compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of stories written by the same
author about the same or similar characters.

Learning Target:

I can compare and contrast themes in different Tomie DePaola books. (Over 3 days).
Success Criteria:
-kids will be successful if they
-Explaining the theme from a fiction book and giving reasons to justify thinking.
-Comparing/Contrasting themes from a certain author
-Making generalizations about the themes a certain author writes about.

Assessment or Evidence:

-Oral informal assessment after part 1: Listen to kids as they talk with each other to determine a theme.
Do they choose a theme that makes sense? Can they explain their reasoning?
-Written Assessment after three parts

Proficient Exemplar:
Oliver Button is a Sissy has a theme of courage because even though kids make fun of him, he has
the courage to keep doing what he loves (dancing), while The Art Lesson has a theme of
perseverance because he works really hard at being an artist.

-Remind students what theme is and see if they can explain it
-Introduce new book: Oliver Button is a Sissy
-State learning target and give them a job as I read
-Read book; stop and remind them of their job (think aloud and partner talk)
-Pausing moments (to get them into the book and reading. Ex. The winner is
-After book is finished have kids turn and talk about theme
-Share out with reasoning

-Students will get in groups based on which Tomie DePaola book they read
-Sit with group and have a conversation about what they theme is and why
-Groups share their thinking
-Add book to a graph on flipchart (this will be used later when we start comparing/contrasting/generalizing)
