What makes one species of animal different from another?
Post-Assessment

Out of the 30 students in my class, 19 of them were 3
the lessons in my unit. Since one was absent the day we did the post
pre- and post- data for 18 of them. I reviewed each students pre
and rated their answers Blank (or I
understanding, or Shows solid understanding of the concepts for each question. The results
were pretty dramatic and can easily be seen on the following charts. The students showed a
much greater comprehension of the material and use of domain
completion of the unit. I am also
including a set of sample answers from
two students pre- and post-
assessments and photos of their actual
papers. The difference is pretty
striking. In addition, here is a photo
that shows all of the study guide pages
Im including after each lesson plan.
The fact that I could take one page from
every single students study guide to
use as an example in my unit means
that they all did great work worthy of
showing off.

Sample answers from two students pre- and post- assessments (the only thing I changed was their
spelling.) Student 2 is one of the students I differentiated for throughout my unit.

1. What makes one species of animal different from another (ex. frogs and deer)?
Student 1: Size. Name. (Pre-assessment)
Student 1: Frogs and deer are different in a lot of ways. They have different adaptations, theyre
different sizes, deer have antlers for defending themselves while frogs dont. However, frogs can swim
and deer cant. (Post-assessment)

Student 2: Frog jumps and deer has horns.
Student 2: Some animals are carnivores like a lion or some animals are omnivores like a bear and some
animals are herbivores like a pronghorn.

2. What determines whether an animal can survive in a specific location?
S1: ?
S1: An animal can be able to survive if it can use its adaptations to help it survive in the provided
location (ex. fish and mountain lions couldnt live in the same location because they have different
adaptations, like fish have gills to survive underwater and a mountain lion has claws and teeth to hunt
other animals.)

S2: I dont know.
S2: Some animals need more space than others to get their food and water.

3. How many animals can live in the same place at the same time?
S1: 30?
S1: It depends on what resources a habitat has, like enough food but not enough shelter--then not too
many. It also depends on how large it is and the size of the animals.

S2: I dont know.
S2: Maybe like 11 because when you get to 12 the animals cant get too much food or water.

4. How are different species of animals connected to one another?
S1: ?
S1: If one species died then another species that eats that animal would eventually become extinct
from lack of food.

S2: I dont know.
S2: Cats and lions are in the same family mostly because they look alike and both eat meat.

5. Name as many animals as you can that live in Colorado.
S1: Bear, goat, deer, moose, wolf, fox, bobcat, antelope, beaver, owl, squirrel, rabbit.
S1: Lynx, rainbow trout, marten, weasel, chipmunk, pronghorn, bobcat, mountain lion, snow leopard,
squirrel, black bear, ferret, deer, painted turtles, insects, horses, rabbits, and lots of house pets.

S2: Wolf, fish, bears.
S2: Pronghorn, trout, black bear, deer, moose.
