1. Discuss your reasons for wishing to pursue a health care career.

Everyone has been seen by a doctor or nurse before and as soon as they walk in the door
we get a first impression. A first impression is set by their qualities and how they communicate
with us. In order to set a good impression the health care professionals need the necessary desire
to persuade good qualities the professional needs certain reasons and motivations to be a good
health care worker. Just like they have good reasons I have three main reasons to persuade my
health care career. Therefore, my desire to help others, the encouragement from my family and
coming from a different country for a better life has motivated me to persuade my health care
career.
When I was very little the desire to help others grew as I got older. Since then I want to
help everybody in any way that I possibly could. Up to this point I still have the same desire.
Therefore, there is nothing better than being a nurse because as a nurse I can help others get
better and help them have a happy stay at the hospital while the patient recovers.
My family has encouraged me to persuade my dreams and to do anything to accomplish
my goals. Whenever I feel down and when I want to give up and just be done with everything
my family encourages me to not let little things bring me down.
Lastly, my parents brought from Mexico to the USA when I was three years old so that I could
have a better life and a better education. My parents did not have the same opportunity as me to
have an education and be someone in life. Therefore, this motivates me because I want to make
them proud of me taken the opportunity they gave me.
Combining the three reasons to persuade my health care career I will do anything needed
to become a nurse and start helping the sick to recover.
2. What have you already done to begin to accomplish the goals you described in the
first question?
In order to accomplish my goals I have set standards for myself to guide me towards my
healthcare career. My mom had my brother when I was thirteen years old that day I challenged
myself to take care of her and pretended to be her nurse. Even though, I was very young I
realized that being a nurse meant lots of patience and communication, since then I began to work
on my communication skills and being more patient. As a result of this, I have improved my
skills but still need much more practice.
Secondly, I have taken the opportunity that southeast offers in the varieties of classes that
will help me towards my health care career. The first class I took was Biomedical Technology
that introduced me to various health care careers and many medical terminology that will most
likely be used in the medical field. Health Science 1 was the second class I took to help me reach
my goals. In this class we learned about the human body and our different body systems such as:
the immune system, Nervous system, muscular system etc. Lastly I am currently taken health
science 2 where we learn how to properly take a care of a patients, how to properly wash our
hands, and many more skills used in the medical field. Overall, the three classes I have taken has
help me a lot because I have learned to appreciate more the medical field and my desire to be a
nurse still stands.
Lastly, I am will take a Nurse Aid class my senior. The nurse aid class will help me
understand many tasks Nurses do and will prepare me mentally and physically to become a
nurse. The nurse aid class will also help me find out if the medical field is the right profession for
me. After passing the exams in the class the students are taken to the hospital to work with actual
patients and this will show me if I have what it takes to be a nurse.
3. What lesson have you learned from your experiences in preparing for a health care and
career that will help you become successful in the future?
While preparing for my health career I have learned three main lessons that will help me
become successful in the future. The first lesson I learned is that a lot of patience is required. As
mentioned before I have been working on being more patient. For example, while waiting for
something or someone many people can get impatient but I try to do something else while
waiting instead of being all impatient. This way and many other ways I have been working on
my patience.
Secondly, I have learned that money is not everything and should not matter. Even
though, nurses get paid a good amount of money this should not matter to us. What really
matters is the care we are going to provide to the patients and the desire we have to actually care
for them.
The last lesson I learned is that nursing requires a lot of hard dedication and work. Being
a nurse requires having all the attention necessary on the patient and caring for them. Therefore,
giving the proper care to the patient requires hard dedication because thats someones life in our
hands.
These are the three lessons that I have learned so far. However, there are more lessons to
be learned in the futre that will help me in my health care career and that will help me be a good
health care professional.

4. Describe a character in fiction, an historical figure, a hero, or a creative work that has
had an influence on you and explain that influence.
I dont really have a character in fiction, historical figure or a creative work that has an
influence on me. But I do have a hero that has always encouraged me. That hero is my family;
my family has always been there for me and always encourages me to move on with my dreams
and give me support to accomplish my goals.
For example, back in January I began a nurse aid class and I was doing well until the last
exam in April. I did not have the average needed to move on I felt so down and unmotivated
however, my family told me not to give up. My mom told me that one can only fail when we
give up. This motivated to retake the class and persuade my goals. My plan was to retake it
during the summer where I could only be focused on that one class but sadly the spaces filled up
to fast. Therefore, I have decided to retake the class during my last semester of my senior year.
Secondly, my father always tells me that he wants me to value my education and do well
in school so that I can have a good future. He always tells me that he had the opportunity to
finish school however he was young and stupid now he regrets it. Therefore, I have the chance to
finish high school move on to college and obtain my nursing degree. Almost one a month we
have the same talk about this and he gives me advice to being a better student and saying no to
bad influences and he encourages me to persuade my career no matter what.
Lastly, my brothers and cousin and the rest of my family check on me every now and
then to make sure Im doing well and if I need someone to talk to they are there for me.
Therefore, my family is my hero because without them I would not have the same
motivation I have today. No matter what my family is always encouraging and supporting me .
5. Discuss some issue of personal, local or national concern and its importance to you.
An issue that is in importance to me from the medical field is racism. Even though racism
is not seen as much today many people are still racist and in the health care profession racism
should not exist.
Even though, minor races are not used as guinea pigs for medical research or denied entry
into hospitals because of their skin color, studies have found that they dont receive the same
standard of care as the Caucasian race. For example, lack of diversity training in health care and
poor cross cultural communication between doctors and patients are some of the reasons why
there is racism. The lack of communication and language barriers exasperates many health care
professions which leads them to racist comment or racist actions.
Another major reason that affects racism is that many physicians are unaware of their
unconscious racial biases. Therefore, according to a study published in the American Journal of
Public Health in March 2012 proved that a staggering two-thirds of doctors exhibited racial bias
towards patients. The research was done by asking doctors to complete the Implicit Association
Test a computerized assessment that calculates how fast test subjects associate people from
different races with positive or negative terms. Those who link people of a certain race with
positive terms more quickly are said to favor that race. Also, during the research the doctors who
participated were asked to associate racial groups with terms signal medical compliance. The
researchers found out that the doctors exhibited a moderate anti-black bias and thought of their
white patients as more likely to be compliant. In conclusion 48% of the health care professions
were white, 22% were black and 30% were Asian. The non-black health care professionals
exhibited more favorism towards white patients while black health care professionals did not
exhibit bias in favor or against any group.
In conclusion, even though racism is not seen as often it is still in many health care
workers and they might not even notice their just like many of the health care workers who
participated in the research.

6. Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, or risk you have taken and its impact
on you.
As mentioned before I began taking the Nurse Aid class back in January this class was a
significant experience to me. Even though, I did not finish the course I learned new tasks that
nurse aids complete.
During labs I learned to take blood pressure and measure vital signs. This task is
important to every health care worker dealing with a patient because vital signs should be
checked often to see any changes in their body. Before taking the class I did not know how to
correctly take blood pressure and measure vital signs but know I do.
During this class I also learned how to properly feed a patient and even though I will not be
working with patients anytime soon I know how to feed a person in case I need to feed someone
close to me who cannot.
Those were only some of the tasks I learned. But by taking this class it helped me understand key
elements needed for being a nurse. This class also helped me to become a better communicator.
