Artmaking
Critical and
Historical
Studies
A 3D study of whimsical and fantastical
flying machine sculptures, which take
students on a Subjective and Structural
exploration of the drawings and designs of
Leonardo Da Vinci. Students will use these as
the basis and inspiration for their own flying
machine sculptures which may have moving
parts, wheels and wings, they could be
freestanding or suspended from above.

In artmaking students will investigate the
designs and structures Leonardo Da Vinci
created. Using graphite and paper, students
will create detailed drawings of their own
flying machine designs and then will go on to
form a 3D sculpture of these flying machines
using cane, tissue paper, wire, found objects
both natural and manufactured and shellac.
Each machine created should be able to be
held in their hands.

In art historical and critical studies, students
will research the practices of Leonardo Da
Vinci, Shaun Tan and Robert Klipple,
particularly investigating how each artists
engages with whimsy and imagination
through their chosen forms.

An exploration of 2D printmaking and
drawing to represent personal and cultural
views about the landscape and natural
environment.
In artmaking, students will learn about the
conventions of botanical illustration,
watercolour and ink drawing, as well as
monoprinting to create a 2D composition
which combines both abstraction/gesture/
memory/recall/spontaneity/simplification of
form AND representation/observation/record
keeping (approximately 7 weeks).
Students will also learn about site-specificity
and the ephemeral by creating a site-specific
installation using natural materials in a
chosen site within the school (approximately
2 weeks).

In art historical and critical studies, students
will investigate how a range of artists
investigate and engage with the landscape in
different ways.

A visit to Middle Harbour will assist students
to build their observations, thereby creating a
body of work.
A 2D investigation of Japanese drawing
techniques and styles specifically the
practices of Manga cartooning and
comic art.

In artmaking students will draw and
create either a manga version of
themselves or a samurai illustration
forming a one page comic strip using
their created character. Students will
then scan these into the computer and
ad colour using PhotoShop

An extention task would be to create a
short film using your comic as the basis
for your script.
Students will investigate the art practices of
the Surrealist through creating to create their
own beautiful mutants or Exquisite
Corpses.

By employing traditional and contemporary
collage and surrealist artmaking practices
Students will participate in the Surrealist
game of Exquisite Corpse, and then create
their own beautiful mutant collage using
magazine cutouts. Once complete, students
will use this collage to form the basis of a
drypoint etching. An ICT extension task will
be for students to photograph their mutants
and to print them on postcard size
photography paper.
