Identity Boxes

Big Idea:
Who am I? What is my identity? How does my identity relate to my culture?
Everyone has an identity. It is defined as an awareness of self. People have two identities;
our self-identity and our social identity. How do our personal and social identities relate
to what culture is? (relating to the overall theme of What is culture?)

Age Group: 2-3
rd
grade

Objective:
Students will understand what identity is. They will also understand that identity can be
broken into parts: personal identity and social identity.
Personal identity: the inner identity that is made up of our inner thoughts and feelings.
Social identity: the outer identity is the part that you share with others on the outside.

Students will explore the idea of identity by constructing an identity box. The identity
box is to bring awareness to the difference of personal and social identity. The inside of
the box contains words and images that represent how we describe ourselves, or our
personal identity. The outside of the box contains words and images that represent how
we think others view us, or our social identity.

Curriculum Standards:
NCSS 1: Culture. Students will explore the idea of identity and how it relates to culture.
We will examine our personal beliefs, values, institutions, behaviors, traditions and way
of life. We will transfer this information in a way that is concrete.

NCSS 4: Individual Development and Identity. Students will engage in activity as a
means to study their individual development and identity.

New Mexico State Standards:
K-4 Benchmark I-ANew Mexico: Students will describe how their identity as New
Mexicans are influenced by the region and surrounding communities.
K-4 Benchmark II-C: Through the process of discussing identity, students will become
familiar with aspects of human behavior and man-made and natural environments in
order to recognize their impact on the past and present and how they relate to who they
are.

Identity and Social Identity.

and feelings.

Hand out sheet with template of 3-d cube cut out. Instruct student to cut template
out. Explain to students that if their identity was represented by this box- the
inside representing your personal identity and the outside representing your social
identity where would you place the list of ideas? Have student at least 4 ideas
from the person identity category and 4 ideas from the social identity and
represent those ideas in the format of words, a picture or a collage from magazine
cut-outs. Guide students through this process, making sure that they choose 4
ideas from each category and express them appropriately on their box templates.
When they are finished they may assemble the box using glue sticks.

4. Share: (10 minutes)
Gather group in semi-circle. Share Identity boxes. Ask members to raise their
hands to comment on each others boxes. Students do not need to share the
personal identity ideas but should at least show that they chose four of the ideas
on the inside and should share at least four ideas on the outside.

During this discussion, help students make connections that their individual
identities help contribute to the overall culture of NM.
