Experience: University of Idaho Internship in Tutoring Writing: As part of a 3-credit course (English 402) I tutored in the UI Writing Center 5 hours a week for a semester. During this course lecture, we discussed the challenges writing tutors may face with students of different backgrounds, including ESL students and students with learning disabilities. I presented a final project on tutoring Dyslexic students in writing. After this internship, I was employed as a paid tutor by the Writing Center for 2 semesters at UI. From this experience I gained the following skills: i. Peer editing of any writing assignments in English ii. Helping ESL students understand grammar and syntax iii. Encouraging students in their challenge to improve their writing Technical Writing: As part of a technical writing course (English 317) I completed the following projects: i. Grant proposal for a food insecurity assessment at UI. This involved analyzing and responding to requests for proposals, proposing plans of action, calculating budgets, creating task schedules, and using language to persuade an audience of reviewers to fund proposed research. Available at http://www.jackortiz.weebly.com. ii. Infographic on teaching English abroad in Indonesia. This involved implementing the principles of Gestalt design, typography, and color theory. Academic Writing: As part of my English Capstone course (English 490: Senior Seminar) I wrote a 13-page analysis on Denis Johnsons book Jesus Son. As part of English 429 I wrote a 12-page paper on the presence of existentialism in John Barths Lost in the Funhouse. Both are available at http://www.jackortiz.weebly.com. Other Experience: Gritman Medical Center, Moscow, ID. Environmental Services Technician. Fall 2012 - present. Duties include: i. Properly cleaning all units of the hospital and patient rooms. ii. Practicing safe, anti-viral methods of sanitation. iii. Cleaning chemical, chemotherapy, and biohazard spills. StudentPainters.Net: I was employed as a Branch Manager by this paid, small business internship the spring and summer of 2012. My duties included: i. Utilizing recruiting techniques to hire a team of painters ii. Door-to-door marketing, sign placement, flyer dropping, offering free estimates on paint jobs iii. Constant correspondence with clients and potential clients iv. Utilizing sales techniques during estimates to gain clientele v. Training inexperienced employees on how to paint houses professionally vi. Managing a job site: prioritizing painting steps and keeping painters on task vii. Dealing with contracts viii. Budgeting painting supplies and maintaining logs of all expenses. Coeur d' Alene Resort: housekeeping. July 2010 to May 2012. Duties included cleaning rooms to guest satisfaction (room attendant) and delivering items to guests and room attendants (house person).
