1/12/2010 - What did I say? (broom or magic)
20100112-WhatDidISay-broom-or-magic.mp3
It is difficult being understood. But sometimes it helps for us to know how we might be misunderstood
in order to be more clear. The "What did I say?" episodes will have Hindi learners trying to be
understood by Hindi speakers. We will find out what are some ways that the Hindi learn can be miss
understood.
This episode has Nathan reading a single sentence to Mr. Naraindas
"

?" (Where is the broom?)

It gets misunderstood as
"

?" (Where is the magic?)

Notice the difference between these words:

- magic

- broom
magic begins with the un-aspirated (ja) and broom begins with the aspirated (jha). This difference
is subtle. The ending is more distinct. "magic" ends with " " (doo) (dental, unaspirated "d" sound with
the "oo" vowel). "broom" ends with the

(notice the dot underneath the letter!! this makes it the

retroflexive "r" sound. "Roo".)
Now you should be able to say "magic" and "broom" correctly in the future.

A Paragraph on Taj Mahal:

The Taj Mahal is a very famous building. It is one of the wonders of the world. It is situated
at Agra on the banks of river Yamuna. It was built by Shah Jahan. He built it in the memory of
his dear wife Mumtaz Mahal. People come from far and wide to see this historical building. It is
very pleasant to see it in rainy season when the scenery on all sides is very beautiful. Hundreds
of years have passed but the beauty is the same, as it was, when it was built.

The Frog in the Well

There was a frog that lived in a shallow well.

"Look how well off I am here! he told a big turtle from the Eastern Ocean. I can hop along the
coping of the well when I go out, and rest by a crevice in the bricks on my return. I can wallow
to my heart's content with only my head above water, or stroll ankle deep through soft mud. No
crabs or fishes can compare with me. I am master of the water and lord of this shallow well, what
more can a fellow ask? Why don't you come here more often to have a good time? "

Before the turtle from the Eastern Ocean could get his left foot into the well, however, he caught
his right claw on something. So he halted and stepped back then began to describe the ocean to
the frog.

"It's more than a thousand miles across and more than ten thousand feet deep. In ancient times
there were floods nine years out of ten yet the water in the ocean never increased.
And later there were droughts seven years out of eight yet the water in the ocean never grew less.
It has remained quite constant throughout the ages. That is why I like to live in
the Eastern Ocean. "

Then the frog in the shallow well was silent and felt a little abashed
