The poem is about a mother who is telling her child to be happy and to smile because it is better to be happy than it is
to be sad. It is revealed later in the poem that the mother is being beaten by the father, which would seem to depress
the son and discourage the mother from her happiness, yet it does the exact opposite. The mother just puts on a
brighter smile and tells Henry to smile as well. The message this poem is sending is to always look at the bright side.
The poem has a normal poem construction and uses a lot of terms with positive feelings and connotations, like "smile"
and "happy." There is one main symbol used, and that is the goldsh. I personally am unaware of what the goldsh is a
symbol for; maybe the son's happiness.
I think this poem is very interesting, The mother is a very strong person, and is smiling and only thinking about her sons
happiness despite what terrible things are happening to her. She is getting beaten on a regular basis, and yet still she
smiles. Why does she show so much strength? How is she so strong? This feeling provokes a heavy feeling of awe, and
it also kind of makes me realize that I can get through whatever problems I go through. There are people like her in real
life, people that smile through everything, and it really makes me realize that I should be one of those people as well.
"my mother, always smiling, wanting us all
to be happy, told me, 'be happy Henry!'
and she was right: it's better to be happy if you
can"

"Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main."
This poem is talking about how no man is ever alone or isolated. Every single action, every single thought, and
every single relationship e!ects at least one other person. A message of "thinking before you act comes to mind."
People should be more careful about what they say and do, because it never e!ects just them, if e!ects the
"continent" of people as a whole.
The island is a symbol of isolation, and the continent of people is a symbol of community.
I like this poem because it helps me to keep my actions in check knowing that whatever i do will e!ect someone,
somewhere, somehow. I wonder why that is the case? I nd it interesting that, even if you wanted to, you could not
distance yourself completely from everyone
