Water boy
A water in Football team kept track of the amount of his team needed. He noticed that the
teams data can be represented as a linear function, it shows that the amount of water they
consumed are depended on the temperature of the day they played in. When the temperature is
90F, the team drank about 220 gallons of water. Additionally, when the temperature is 76F,
they drank about 178 gallons of water. With this information, I will model it with a linear
equation, and explain what the rate of change in the equation means.
Lets go in depth and model our situation. The equation of a line is in the Y=mx+b format.
The rate of change means that for every input there is an output. The rate of change is
represented as m in our equation. For our question, the rate of change is for one degree
fahrenheit increased the football team consumes 3 gallons of water. To find the rate of change
we could use a formula that was made for these type of questions. Or in other words the change
in Y over the change in X. The formula is . To find the slope all we have to
do is plug in the right numbers in the right place of the equation and find the slope or the rate of
change.

First write the equation.
m = 220 - 178
90 - 76 Plug in the numbers.

m = 42
14 Subtract the numbers.

m = 3 Divide the two numbers.

Now that we have the rate of change found we could plug in the number into the formula.
Y=3x+b. Now, we have to find the b. The b is the Y-intercept of the graph. To find the Y-
intercept we have to plug in the ordered pairs into the equation. The y is 220 and the x is 90.

y = 3x +b Write the current state of the equation.
220 = 3(90) + b Plug the ordered pairs in the equation.
220 = 270 + b Multiply the 3 by 90
-50 = b Subtract 270 on both sides.

Wola!! we got the y-intercept. Lets plug all the numbers to the equation and see what happens.
y=3x - 50. I will just explain the rate of change in the context our question. In general, the rate of
change is stating that, as the input increases by 1'F, the output increases by 3 gallons of water.
For an equation to be linear the input has to increase or decrease by a certain value every time,
and the output has to increase and decrease by a certain value every time. The slope or the rate of
change has to be constant.
