Dear Dr. Bruce,

The purpose of this letter is to introduce you to my portfolio, and inform you that I have a full
understanding of the student learning outcomes (SLOs). I have chosen specific assignments that allow
me to present my understanding of how to properly use these SLOs in order to become a more
proficient writer. First, I chose to use my argument essay, which shows my understanding of most of the
SLOs in one essay. Second, I chose to add my Conference Prep sheet which included the rest of the
SLOs which were not covered completely by the argumentative assignment.
I chose to include my argumentative assignment because I struggled writing it more than any
other essay we wrote in English 301. This paper gave me a difficult time because of the amount of
information that was available for me to write about. I did plenty of research on my particular subject,
(Blood Doping) and when I was done, I felt that I wouldnt have been able to limit myself to the allotted
pages we were allowed. I had to then limit the amount of information I was going to be able to present
within my essay.
Despite the difficult time I had completing this assignment, I was able to cover SLOs two, three,
four, five, and part of one within this essay. The paper was to be a formally written research paper using
scholarly sources. I was able to display all of the learning objectives within the parameters that this
essay covered. I chose this paper, because I feel it shows the most improvement across all of the SLOs;
and I know that revising my own work helps me become a better writer more than anything else.
The second piece that I chose to include for my portfolio was my conference prep sheet. I chose
this paper because it covered the parts of the SLOs that werent covered by the argument assignment.
The conference prep sheet has informal writing, which is peer reviewed between one another in our
portfolio groups, and therefore satisfies the collaboration SLO. This shows that as a writer, I can take
constructive criticism and use it to improve my work. My conference prep sheet also shows that I can
give critique to others on their assignments, so that they too can improve their writing.
I hope that this letter will help show you how I have improved as a writer throughout this
course, not just for my grade, but for personal gain as well. Writing has always been a difficult task for
me since I have a hard time articulating myself and turning my thoughts into formal writing. I am
constantly striving to become a better writer. Through the exercises that were practiced in class, and
the revision work that I have done, I know that it has helped improve my writing skills and I hope that it
will continue to improve them as well.
