Activity 2: Rating Wings Grammatical Explanation
Please use Swans six criteria to comment on Wings explanation to the
students query.
Student A: Miss Cheung, why should we use If I were here instead
of If I was?
Wing: Okay. So remember, when we use were here, we are trying to
use the past tense to tell the reader, that means us, for those who
read this sentence. That this is not real. This is unreal situation and
this is SO impossible. So, at that time, we will not use was but we will
use were to tell the reader that the whole thing is unreal. This one is
impossible and this is impossible. So we will use were here but we
dont use was here. It is talking about the mood. We really want to tell
your reader, okay, this is something unreal, it is something impossible
to happen. So, you will use were for she, for he and for it. You will
also use were in this conditional type 2. Alright.
