Learn God ~ Love God ~ Share God ~ Serve God
MARCH 2014
Many years ago, when our winter was quite mild, my
tulips and daffodils started to come up in February. I
was worried that it would snow or get bitter cold (like
weve had so much this year) but it didnt. Those
flowers came up an inch or two and then just stayed
that way for a couple of months. They eventually flowered, and were
beautiful.

No need to worry about the tulips and daffodils this year. They are safely
tucked in under a foot or two of snow. But you can be sure that in a few
weeks or a few more weeks after that, the ground will begin to thaw and the
bulbs will start to send up shoots. God created them that way. They spend
much of the year waiting, and then when the time is right, they burst forth in all
of Gods splendor.

God created you that way too. We have seasons of our lives when God is
preparing our hearts for ministry. Then its time to burst forth and fulfil our
purpose. And then there is a season to rest, to step back and let God
strengthen us for the next burst of energy, in order to flower again.

You were created to love God and to love people. That can be done in any of
an infinite number of expressions. The expressions will look different in the
different seasons of your life. Where are you right now? Is God preparing
your heart for a new ministry? Are you ready to burst forth, or are you
flowering right now? Is it time to step back to be strengthened again, to flower
differently later?

God has purposed us to make a difference in our families, in our community,
and in our church. In church we should see an ebb and flow of people who
are leading ministries and mission, as people are prepared, flower, and then
need to be re-strengthened to flower again.

We have a few people in our congregation whose current flowering season is
coming to an end, and its time for God to prepare them for their next ministry.
God may be preparing you to either take their place, or to begin something
new. It is my hope that you will pay attention to the whisper of God so that
you know when it is time to flower. There are so many ways that we can love
God, love people and make disciples. Is it time for you to burst forth in all of
Gods splendor?

Ill see you in church, where we flower together!

I smelled spring in the air as I walked to work today. The sky was bright and clear. The birds were
singing and I wasn't wearing boots and heavy mittens. It makes me think about gardening even
though the snow is 2 ft deep on the ground. The Garden Committee would like to have a meeting for
input from anyone interested in helping us find a little different direction. We want to find a way to
serve more people. We have a large plot that may be able to serve more people if we reconfigured
how we use it.
1) If you would like a family plot come join us
2) If you would like to work the community plot with which we supply the Food Pantry come join us
3) If you are someone who knows nothing about gardening and would like to learn and join good
company come join us
4) If you are a high school student and would like to earn some community service hours come join
us
5) If you would like to deliver produce to shut ins or the food pantry come join us
Currently we have 10 kids atending School Bus Caf on Thursdays afer school. We have several volunteers: Amber
Vrielinck ( Church Member), Karen Forseth and Middle School student Rana Pluemer, that are here each week. The
kids are really enjoying the program and look forward to coming each week. Led by Tracy Harle
The School Bus Caf is looking for some donors to help cover the cost of the banner above and donatons for craf
supplies and snacks. If you would like to donate, please write SB banner on your check or envelope.
There is a place for all of the above ideas and more. Come share your thoughts and we will work out a plan.
The benefits are food, fun and fellowship. Meeting will be March 4th at 7:00 in the library.

Coffee Hours are a time of fellowship and are
held between services. Our members, friends,
and visitors are heartily welcomed to join us for
a snack and a cup of delicious coffee or juice!
Coffee Hour is a wonderful opportunity to catch
up on news with friends and acquaintances that
we do not get a chance to talk to during the
week. Visitors are especially encouraged to
mingle during Coffee Hour. You are certain to
feel at home and may even make a new friend or
two.
If you would like to volunteer to host a coffee
hour (it's easier than you think, and so
appreciated) please sign up in the folder in the
lobby or contact Jennifer in the church office.
The Cap Club met on February 4th.
Members present were Pastor Brenda, Tom &
Nancy Ziegenfuss, Jim & Carol Kirkpatrick, Tom
Lindahl, Dolores Hutchison, and Hank & Judy
Bossenbroek.
All members had good reports on the shut ins they
are visiting. Communion was taken to many of the
people we visit.
Our next meeting will be April 1st at 10:00 AM.
If anyone knows of someone who would like a visit
from one of our members please contact Pastor
Brenda or any of the Cap Club Members.
Blessings to everyone.

Mindys
This semester is off
to a great start for
Spark. We kicked off
the semester with an
awesome spirit filled
mission trip to
Nashville, TN and the Passion
conference. What better way to start out
the new semester than with singing
praise to the Lord with 20,000 of your
peers? Conferences like this open our
eyes to what heaven is really going to be
like and the awesome huge God we
serve now! God often uses conferences
to give us deeper insight into who he is
and what he has planned for our lives.
Conferences are only as good as the
follow up we put into when we arrive
back. For instance if we do not apply
what we have learned we lose it. Like so
many things in life if we dont use it we
lose it. To help retain and apply what we
have learned the Carnahans have been
opening their house to us for a college
age small group. We have been
discussing our weeks together, what we
have been learning, along with doing the
24 Hours study.
Do you ever struggle
growing in your faith?
Ever wonder if anyone
struggles with same way
you do? Do you just
wish sometime you
could go someplace that would help you
grow in your faith and help you live it out?
Well that is exactly why God created small
groups! As humans God created us to live
in community and to never have to try to do
life on our own. The truth is life is tough,
and we need each other to grow and to
experience God. I know life is busy and you
probably have a hundred and ten things to
get done this week alone but what if you
could sacrifice one hour a week to meet in a
small group. I think you would find it worth
the sacrifice and maybe even consider
cutting out more time in your busy schedule
for it. That hour could just become the one
hour you look most forward to every week.
See the small group brochure in the lobby
for details on small groups currently offered
or talk to Mindy Freiburger about starting
one.
Our students have been
having a lot of fun this
past month in Merge.
In our meeting we have
been discussing sin, how
it entangles us, changes everything, and how
Jesus came to rescue us from our sin and change
our lives forever.
The students have also been building community
through eating dinner together and playing
games. These are always fun and adventure
filled. Games are important in youth ministry
because they break down barriers and allow
friends and community to be made.
In March we will continue our Wednesday night
meetings along with a bowling outing on March
19th and the Winter Jam Conference on March
23. Look for more details soon.

PLATTEVILLE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Rebuilding and Revitalizing the Church
Over the past couple years, various groups have attended church leadership conferences. If there was a
common theme to all these conferences it would be rebuilding and revitalizing our churches. After returning,
these people have meet on several occasions to discuss what techniques and ideas would best apply to PUMC.
The article below is the first in a series that will be publish in the newsletter. These articles will discuss what
we learned at these conferences and how they would fit with the mission and ministries of PUMC.
Seven people attended the Turnaround Church Bootcamp Reaching New People during the last weekend of
October held in Northbrook, IL. It was sponsored by the Northern Illinois Annual Conference (NIAC). Sam
Royappa, our district superintendent, wanted as many lay people to attend as possible. Toward this end, he
made the arrangements with the NIAC to allow churches from the Wisconsin Annual Conference to attend.
Plus, his office paid for several attendees registration fees.
This bootcamp was led by Jim and Kim Griffiths. Both are ordained pastors. Jim did five new church starts.
Kim did two new church starts in Florida. Tim founded Griffith Coaching to assist other pastors who are
doing new church starts or rebuilding/revitalizing existing churches. Jim and Kim did not know each other
when they were each doing the new church starts. Several years after Tim started his company and it was
growing, Kim came on board. If you want more background information, go to www.griffithcoaching.com.
We have decided to get coaching to reach new people. Our coach is Paul Nickerson, and his website it
www.nickersoncoaching.com. If you would like to be part of this group that is working on how to reach new
people, speak to Pastor Brenda.
The next several articles will be a recap of
Sharing God by Building Relationships
125,000 churches closed between 1990 and 2010. 80% of all churches are experiencing numerical decline.
On a given Sunday, only 19% of the USA population will attend worship services. The fastest growing
segment of Americans is the group claiming no religion. In 2012 this group comprised 20% of Americans.
32% under the age of 30 claim no religion. 70% of the youth ages 18-22 drop out of church and never return.
(Note: these statistics apply to all church in the USA, not just the UMC.)
Jesus commands us in the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19) to go out and make disciples of all nations.
This sounds simple, but turning a command into action steps and results is another story. How do you go
about going out to make disciples? Standing at the street corner and yelling, Repent and be saved! is not
very effective. Nor is it very effective to trap people at work or social events with an in-your-face question,
Are you saved?
In the Bible are many stories about Jesus preaching on a hillside or from a boat offshore. The result was
3000 or 5000 being saved! (Do you realize that 5000 is about the population of Platteville?!) Billy Graham
preached to full stadiums and hundreds were saved every night. Brenda preaches good sermons, but preaching
alone will not be enough to numerically grow our church. People cannot hear the sermons unless they come
through the doorsor in this day and age, go to our web site. How do we go about numerically growing our
church?
The answer is by building relationships. By getting to know peoplepeople outside your normal social
circlesand doing things with them, eventually they are going to ask about you. This gives you the opening
to tell them that you are a Christian and how it has affected your life.
The next article in this series will look the different methods for building relationships along with how we
can intentionally place ourselves in situations so that relationships can take root.

Announcement From the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC)
(This announcement was given Sunday, February 9, 2014 towards the end of both worship
services.)
I am Warner Smidt, the chair of the SPRC. This announcement is being given on behalf of an
unanimous SPRC.
The SPRC is the Staff-Parish Relations Committee. Just as the name implies, this committee
is charged with the oversight of the staff in the fulfillment of the mission and ministries of our
church. Two years ago a position was created to work with the college youth, middle & high
school youth, and small group Bible studies.
PUMC has been a two-pastor church. We are now a one-pastor church. In creating the
above position, one of the primary goals was to help take some of the load off the pastor.
This position has not worked out in the way that it was envisioned and hoped for. This
position is being discontinued as of the end of the UWP spring semester.
We are not the same church that we were three years ago, or two years ago, ... or even last
year. We have had many people attend leadership conferences over the past two years. The
Church Council has developed the Learn God, Love God, Share God, Serve God model for
making disciples which is now painted over the entrance to this sanctuary. The Church
Council is continuing to flesh out the action steps to implement this model. Continuing to
support the youth programs, campus ministry and small group Bible studies are very
important. The SPRC will weigh these things as future staffing decisions are considered.
Mindy has been working time for Intervarsity at UWP. Her plans are to expand this into a
fulltime job. Mindy needs our prayers and support. If you are interested in providing financial
support for Mindys Intervarsity position she would be more than happy to visit with you.

Souper Sunday fell on Sunday February 2 in 2014. Holy Rollers and Redeemer led
11:00AM worship with the Sanctuary at full capacity. The Holy Rollers and Redeemer teen music
ministry bands served a fantastic soup luncheon with 24 varieties of delicious soup, toppings and
side dishes galore. The desert table was a mountain of cookies, bars and delectable treats that
never seemed to dwindle. The busy teenagers served over 100 guests with the attendees
generously donating over $1800.00 to the teen bands to help with their ongoing expenses. Clean
up time in the kitchen was tackled by the teens with energy, enthusiasm and a couple of towel snaps
here and there. Several dozen fresh baked cookies escaped to the basement freezer to be retrieved
later at Wednesday night rehearsals. A very special
