In my syllabus I state the following about late work:

It is expected that all assignments are completed by the posted due date. Assignments
completed after the due date will receive no more than 50% credit up to three days after the
due date. Beyond that point, no points will be earned for late assignments.
Work needs to be completed on time. It would not be fair for students that worked hard to get
the assignment in on time to receive the same score as someone who turned the assignment in
late. Respecting due dates shows professionalism.
In my course, I chose performance assessments. This is not the type of course where I wanted
students to be able to recall information learned. Rather, I want them to be able to apply what
they are learning into their classroom. The course includes several surveys, a reading log, a wiki
project and many more projects that will teach students how to use some web 2.0 tools.
My grading scale is as follows:
A 1035-932 Points
B 931-828 Points
C 827-724 Points
D 723-621 Points
F 620 or less Points
I chose to use a points grading scale instead of a percentage because I want students to be able
to easily figure out what their grade is. Basically, this is a 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% grading scale
converted into points.
Students will receive points for participating in the discussion board. Because this is an online
course, it is important to post your ideas, respond to classmates and have conversations
through the discussion board. Many things can be learned through using the discussion board.
Students are expected to participate in this course. This will be evaluated through many
interactive assignments. The interactive assignments include a collaborative wiki, using a
Padlet, presenting book chats to classmates and commenting on classmates projects through
the discussion board.
In my opinion, I think students benefit more from specific feedback rather than a letter grade.
When teachers use standards to evaluate students, the student knows specifically what they
are mastering and what they need to continue to work on. In college level courses, it is difficult
to evaluate students on standards. In that case, I would use rubrics for as many assignments as
possible. That way, students will be able to see why they earned the score they did, and what
they could do to receive more points next time.
