Title: Student Teaching Reflection

Date: 1/31/14

Artifact Description:
My artifacts for this experience are two of my reflections from my student teaching experience at Iowa-
Grant Middle School. The first reflection from the week of January, 31
st
, was only my second week
there, but my first week of teaching. The second reflection is from my second to last week there. I
chose that one to show that even after eight weeks, I still was able to reflect and give self-criticism. In
these reflections there is also advice and criticism from my cooperating teacher.
Alignment
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment
This experience best aligns with standard nine of the Wisconsin Teacher Development and Licensure
Standards which states: The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluated the effects of
his/her choices and actions on others and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally.
This experience aligns with standard nine because my reflections from student teaching show that I was
able to look back at my lessons from the previous week and evaluate myself. This gave me the chance
to look at how successful my lessons were. I was able to see how the students and I reacted to the
activities. Reflecting on every week is an important aspect of growing professionally because it allows
you to take note of certain things that worked and certain things that did not work. The artifacts show
that I understand critical frameworks for reflecting on teaching practice. It also displays that I am
committed to seeking out, developing, and continually refining practices that address the individual
needs of students. Finally, the reflection by my cooperating teacher shows that I seek out professional
literature, colleagues, and other resources to support my own development as a learner and a teacher.

UW-Platteville School of Education Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment
This experience best aligns with KSD4.e. of the UWP School of Education Knowledge, Skill, and
Disposition statement which displays a teachers growth and development professionally. This
experience best aligns with this standard because throughout my reflections, I show my growth from
week two to week eight. During my time at Iowa-Grant, my reflections were constant. The reflections
by Mrs. Boldt display that I grew professionally.

Reflection
What I learned about teaching/learning:
I learned that it is important for teachers to reflect on their experiences frequently. The reflections
were helpful for me to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses of every week. It is important for
teachers to realize what they do well and what they need to work on. Doing so will help educators
develop more effective lessons and activities.

What I learned about myself as a prospective educator:
I learned that by reflecting, it is easier for me to make lessons and establish a stronger relationship with
my students. It is important for me not only to look at what my weaknesses are, but also my strengths.
By looking at my strengths I can reuse certain aspects of a lesson that were successful. By looking at my
weaknesses, I can refine certain aspects of a lesson and eventually turn them into strengths. By
reflecting, I was able to look back on an entire week and see whether or not I accomplished what I
wanted to.
