Introduction v
INTRODUCTION
Sometimes things happen that we just cannot control. For instance what if your fence were to be
damaged to the point where you had to fix it. Would you call someone else to do it for you, and
possibly pay an excess amount of money? Or would you just do it yourself, and probably save
money in order for you to pay for the things you actually want or need? If your question is, how
do I even repair it? then I have an answer for you. This manual will teach you everything you
need to know in order to rebuild that fence, and help you save up for that one thing you always
wanted or need.

Chapter 1 3
CHAPTER 1: Prepare For Rebuilding
Getting The Materials
In order to build your fence you will need the following materials:
Wooden Panel
o Be sure to measure the gap and height of your fence so you know what wood
panel you need.
A Shovel
Pen
Notebook
Measuring Tape
Pickaxe
Steel Poles
Wood Fence Brackets
o Buy as many as needed, for the gap in our fence we will be using six.
o Be sure to buy brackets in groups (two for each pole you use).
A Power Drill
Screws
o Make sure they are long enough to penetrate the wood, but not so long that they
will come out of the other side of the fence.
Cement
o How much you need depends on how much you are replacing, for this project we
will be using a two 50 pound bags of Quikcrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix
Paint (optional)
Cleaning up the remains
Before you begin to repair your fence you must first remove or clean up the part of the fence that
has been damaged.
Clean Up Process
Before the repair process you must first do the following:
1. Pick up all wooden pieces that have broken off your fence.
2. Disconnect the broken wood panels from the rest of the fence that is in good shape.
a. Disconnect all the broken wooden panels so there will be a gap in your fence with
nothing but a steel pole in the middle connected to nothing.
i. The reason we have the pole connected to nothing is we plan on removing
this pole, and replacing it with a new one.
3. If your pole is damaged (bent or just not standing up straight) you will need to remove
this pole, and replace it with a new pole.
4. After this checklist has been finished you can continue on to the repairing process.
4 How To Repair A Fence
Note: Pole Replacement
First, you will need to get the pickaxe and shovel and
follow these steps in order to remove the pole:
1. Using the pickaxe chip away at the concrete at
the base of the pole.
2. Use the shovel to remove the concrete as it is
broken down.
3. Repeat steps one and two until the concrete is
almost or completely removed.
4. Remove the pole from the ground. (use the
shovel if needed)
5. At the end of this you should have nothing but a
hole in the ground with little to no concrete in it.

CHAPTER 2: Measurements
Proper Measurements
One of the most important things when it comes to building a fence is measurement. One inch
can be the difference between a fence being too long to fit in the space, or too short to event fill
the space. So pay close attention to these next instructions.
Fence Height
Before you go out and buy the wooden panels you should know the height of your fence. This
way you will know the height of the panels you should buy. In order to measure the fences
height these steps:
1. Grab the tape measure, pen, and a
notebook.
2. Grab a partner to help you measure.
3. Go to an undamaged part of the fence
and hold the base of the tape measure at
the bottom of the fence.
4. Have your partner hold the tape, while
you hold the base of the tape measure.
5. Have your partner extend the tape
measure to the top of the fence, and stop
at the top.
a. Be sure your partner is holding
his part exactly at the top of the
fence.
b. Keep the measuring tape is in a
straight line, and not doing this
may cause inaccurate measurements.
6. Whoever is holding the base of the tape measure will then read the official measurement
of the gap.
7. Record the measurement that was read in your notebook and label the measurement as
Height of Fence so you know the measurement for future purposes as well as the height
of the fence you need to buy.
Steel Pole Height
Follow the same steps used for the Fence Height in order to get the height of the pole.
Record the measurement tin your notebook and label the measurement as Pole Height
so you know the measurement for future purposes as well as the height of the pole you
need to buy.
o Be sure to write down a measurement bigger than one that was measured because
you have to remember part of the pole will be going into the ground.

8 How To Repair A Fence
Fence Gap
In order to measure the hole in the fence you
will need to follow these steps:
1. Grab the tape measure, pen, and a
notebook.
2. Grab a partner to help you measure.
3. Stand at one side of the gap of the
fence with your partner.
a. Stand where the gap begins.
4. Have your partner grab a hold of the
tape, while you hold the base of the
tape measure.
a. The base of the tape measure is
the part where the tape is held.
(Picture shown in page 7 in the
section Fence Height)
5. Have your partner now walk to the other side of the gap, with the tape in hand,
extending the tape to the other side of the gap.
6. Have your partner stop once he reaches where the gap ends.
7. Now both of you hold your part of the tape measure against the fence.
a. Be sure your partner is holding their part exactly where the gap ends.
b. Keep the measuring tape is in a straight line, and not loose and dipping down.
i. If the measuring tape is loose and dipping down this will give you an
inaccurate measurement.
8. Who ever is holding the base of the tape measure will then read the official measurement
of the gap.
a. Read the measurement from where the gap begins. Dont read any measurement
earlier or later than that.
9. Record the measurement in your notebook and label the measurement as Fence Gap so
you know the measurement for future purposes as well as the length of the wood panel
you will need to buy.
After Measurements
After you have taken the proper measurements go out and buy the wood panel and steel pole
from your local home improvement store, according to the measurements you have taken.

CHAPTER 3: Building The Fence
The Pole
In order to get started on rebuilding a fence you have to set the pole into its proper place. The
pole will be cemented into the ground in place of the one you took out of the ground earlier.
Setting In The Pole
1. Get the pole and Quikcrete Fast-
Setting Concrete Mix.
2. Place the pole into the hole in the
ground where the pole you removed
used to be.
a. Make sure when you place the
pole into the hole it is in
alignment with the rest of the
fence.
b. Also make sure that the pole is
standing up straight. (It is fine
if you hold it in place)
3. Pour the bag of Quikcrete Fast-Setting
Concrete Mix into the hole around the
pole but DO NOT fill the hole
completely.
4. Add water into the Quikcrete Fast-
Setting Concrete Mix until it looks flooded.
5. Fill the remainder of the hole with soil dug up from the hole when you previously
removed the old pole.
6. Wait about an hour or two, and the pole should be set in.
The Fence
Theses are the final steps to rebuilding your fence.

12 How To Repair A Fence
Placing The Fence
1. Gather about four of your friends and have
them help you pick up the fence.
2. Place the wooden panel in the gap with the
poles on the inside of your backyard.
3. Grab the fence brackets, screws, and power
drill.
a. You will need two fence brackets for
each pole.
4. Have your friends hold the wooden panel in
place until the fence is completely secure.
a. Not doing so may ruin the alignment
of the fence.
5. Place a bracket at the bottom of the pole and use the power drill in order to secure the
bracket into place.
6. Place a bracket at the top of the pole and use
the power drill in order to secure the bracket
into place.
7. Repeat steps five and six until the fence is
secure at the beginning, middle, and end of
the wooden panel.
8. Once wooden panel is secure you now have
a repaired fence.

CHAPTER 4: Troubleshooting

Improper Measurements
In order to build a fence properly you must take proper measurements. Failing to take proper
measurements will result in the following problems:
A wooden panel too short to cover the gap.
A wooden panel too long to cover the gap.
A wooden panel taller than the rest of your fence.
A wooden panel shorter than the rest of your fence.
A pole too short to support the fence.
A pole too tall for the rest of your fence.
If your measurements are incorrect you will have to return to the store in order to get the things
you need in the proper size. In order to prevent these things from happening be sure to measure
everything properly. To see how to measure things properly please go to Chapter 2:
Measurements in this manual.
