GRADE 11 GENERAL MUSIC MARIMBA

PERFORMANCE


ASSESSMENT JESU, JOY OF MANS DESIRING

Task Abstract

The students will play an excerpt from Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring on the marimba.
They will be graded on posture, mallet hold, rhythmic accuracy, note accuracy and
phrasing. The performance test will be scored out of 20 points.

Benchmarks

1. Students will be able to read the sheet music of Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring
2. Students will be able to stand at the marimba with correct posture
3. Students will be able to play Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring with rhythmic
accuracy, note accuracy, and phrasing.

Pennsylvania Standards

9.1.8.A: Know and use the elements and principles of each art form to create works
in the arts and humanities.

9.1.8.B: Recognize, know, use and demonstrate a variety of appropriate arts
elements and principles to produce, review and revise original works in the arts.

9.1.8.C: Identify and use comprehensive vocabulary within each of the arts forms.

9.3.8.E: Interpret and use various types of critical analysis in the arts and
humanities.

Task Objectives

Students will:

1) Demonstrate an understanding of treble clef note reading.
2) Demonstrate an understanding of quarter note and dotted half note value.
3) Play the marimba with proper posture.
4) Phrase the excerpt.

Task Description

After completing a unit on the Baroque period, the students will apply their
knowledge of the marimba and Bach to play Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring on the
marimba.


Resources Required

1) Marimba
2) Mallets
3) Music

Prior Learning Required

Before the performance assessment, the students must learn to play the marimba
and read music. This content will be covered in a previous unit.



Possible Teaching Strategies

1) Introduce Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring in a listening activity.
2) Demonstrate playing the piece on the marimba.
3) Watch examples of percussionists playing the marimba.
4) Offer independent practice sessions.
5) Spend individual time with each student.
