Problem Scenario:
You are asked to design a 30 minute engaging
instructional lesson for a PreK-20 grade of your choice,
for a subject of your choice.

I am going to be teaching a class of kindergarten students
about Dr. Seuss & his Books. I am going to focus on Dr. Seusss
ABC book. Dr. Seuss books are really good books to help
children learn to read and It will be a perfect lesson to teach
kindergarteners because they are learning to read at that age.

Objective:
The objective for my lesson is for my students to learn the sounds
letters make, as well as think of things that start with certain letters.
It also will help them get familiar with the sounds and forming
words, and making connections between letters, words, their
sounds, and meanings.

Engaging activities and instructional
strategies:

I am first going to show the classroom the cover of the book and read the title and
authors name, followed by a little background information on Dr. Seuss. I will ask them
if they know who dr. Seuss is and if they have read any of his books, I will also tell them
the names of some of his popular books like The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and
Ham, Horton Hears a Who!, How the Grinch stole Christmas, etc. His books have a
lot of made up characters and rhymes. So I am going to tell the students that and then ask
them to help me think of some rhymes. To do this, I am going to have a slide on the
presentation that says What rhymes with. TALL, after everyone has shared their
ideas, I will pull up a list of a bunch of words that rhyme with tall. I will do the same
thing for a few more words.
After we do that, I am going to have the class sing the alphabet song all together.
After that, I will explain and talk about how letters make up words, and that each letter
has its own sound. Ill pick some letters, like C, F, and J for example and tell them what
sound that letter makes. Then together as a class, we will come up with some words that
start with that particular letter.
Once we have done that, I am going to read the class the ABC Book. This book is
great because it helps to teach the letter sounds. Once I have finished reading the book to
the classroom, I am going to explain to the students that they are going to become an
illustrator, or artist. I will assign each student a different letter, having already printed out
blank pieces of white paper with a big upper case and lower case letter on the top left
corner. I will then pass out those papers and no student will have the same letter as
another one. I will then tell the students to think of a few things that start with their letter
and to draw them. To help them out a little bit, Im going to have a bunch of different
pictures of things on the board to give them ideas, and Im also going to tell them if they
get stuck to look around the classroom too. Ill have the students also rewrite the letter,
both uppercase and lowercase at the bottom of the paper.
I will provide some other Dr. Seuss books for the students to read and look
through if they finish ahead of time or want to look at after. When the activity is done,
Im going to combine all of the letters with illustrations and make them into an alphabet
book to keep in the classroom.

Assessment:

I am going to ask my students to tell me the sound of the letter they were assigned, and
show me their picture and tell me what pictures they drew and see if they begin with their
assigned letter.
